According to the stats on this site, the 2000 and
2004 raw vote totals for the South Carolina
democratic primary are as follows:

2000 South Carolina Democratic Primary

Al Gore  Tennessee  8,864
Uncommitted  -  514
Bill Bradley  New Jersey  172
William Kreml  South Carolina  107
TOTAL     9657

2004 South Carolina Democratic Primary

John Edwards North Carolina 126,320
John Kerry Massachusetts 84,872
Al Sharpton New York 26,946
Wesley Clark Arkansas 20,189
Howard Dean Vermont 13,055
Joe Lieberman Connecticut 6,853
Other -  2,419
TOTAL     280654

Can anyone say if this is correct?

Thanks & RSVP

Hmmm...that does seem a little weird. On the other hand, the SC primary was hotly contested this year, in 2000 it had just been decided and I think Bradley had dropped out. So that could explain it. According to this site, more people voted in the Rhide Island primary than in the SC primary in 2000. It could be b/c of timing.

Or lack of enthusiasm.  Even southern Democrats weren't friendly to Gore.  And it was much less of a race in 2000.

In 2000 it didn't really matter, because Gore was the only major candidate running by then.
This year it really does.

The biggest reason is probably that in 2000 South Carolina was a Caucus, rather than a primary.

The Nevada Caucus only drew about 1100 voters in 2000, while the Montana primary (on the last week of primaries) drew nearly 80,000

2000 SC was a Caucus - and votes are not necessarity counted the way they are in a primary.
