Depends what it would entail. Are we saying the government should stop making things in Spanish and other languages? It's perfectly fine for a country to have an official language, but that doesn't mean excluding others.

Which version of English?  Unlike some languages such as French, we don't have an official standard for what constitutes English.  For example, which ſpelling conuentions wouldſt thou haue the gouernment honour and vſe?

Only if spanish was given equal status to English. And I mean equal status not the biased towards the minority language bilingualism currently in effect in Quebec and what liberals want to bring to california(if its not there yet).

English already is the de facto official language of the USA. That's why the official versions of all the US laws and Constitution are in English, court proceedings are in English, etc.

Yes in the sense that all government business would be conducted in English and public education would be in English and road signs would be in English.

Aye.  National homogenity in something such as language in our circumstances is essential to a thriving nation and healthy democracy.

I'm in full agreement with something Mike Gravel said in a debate.

English already is the official language of the United States. We don't need some law to say that, it already is so.

Steve Lonegan for President!!

Though seriously, the points he raises are correct.  The government needs to stop spending extra money to equip things like voting machines in two languages.  If you can't speak English you should not be voting.

Because not having that before this point has ruined our country...?

Hardly. Look at places such as Switzerland.

Anyway, I wouldn't have a problem with English being recognized as some sort of "primary language", but not an official national language.

US English

In order to enforce "US English", you'd have to establish a government organization responsible for the standardization of the language (something like La Real Academia Española), as "US English" is ephemeral and undefined, and declaring it official would bear no difference from declaring the official language to be Klingon.

I'm fine without the extra expense. The country has somehow survived enormous influxes of German-speaking immigrants. Parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Kentucky were almost exclusively German-speaking as late as the Civil War. Yet we still speak English and will continue to speak English.

Even as recently as this century were large parts of the Midwest primarily German-speaking. FDR had campaign literature printed in German for parts of Minnesota and North Dakota.
