A West of Scotland stalwart who's been around a long time, having won a byelection in 1982. He was in the Shadow Cabinet when Labour were in opposition (when we are in opposition the shadow cabinet is elected by the parliamentary party rather than appointed by the leader). However, Tony Blair didn't think much of him and gave him a junior position outside the cabinet in 1997, and then dropped him back onto the backbenches a year later.
