I thought it was appropriate to have a thread for reflections on him, given that he would have turned 100 today.

He was very much a transitional figure.

Probably the best post-Reagan Republican President, but that isn't really saying much. Especially when he put f***ing Clarence Thomas on the Supreme Court.

One of the best foreign policy Presidents we have. It is because of this I consider him to be a top 5 President post WW2 along with Reagan, Truman, Eisenhower and Clinton

When you limit it to post-Reagan Republican presidents, his only competition is Dubya and Trump! Almost anyone would look like Lincoln next to them.

It's extremely ironic that one of his own sons, by being such a terrible president, actually did much to raise his (George H.W. Bush's) image in history.  I think he must have realized this and it must have saddened him.

And by the way, he's better than Reagan too.

He was not a good president in any sense; or a good vice president, or a good CIA director, etc.

Amazing foreign policy, a little weaker on domestic policy, criminally underrated president.

He would have been a better prez, had be been elected in 1980 instead. He was still a leading figure of the moderate wing then and slammed Reagan's proposals as vodoo economics. It was also during the era of Reagan his party embraced the Christian right and Christian fundamentalists. HW was making a strong play for them in 1988 and basically let them run his campaign.

Our last "serious" president. All the others since him have been celebrities.

Today, it's easy to sentimentalize his Patrician manners and long resume as the dignified qualities of presidents past, but he was overwhelmingly seen as out of date and out of touch in his own time.
