Trump would never accept any running mate who's topping in one single category.

What a weirdly lighthearted story, the way this paper treats it. He became a homeless alcoholic at 18 after his mother died, and the only thing anyone ever thought to do about it was put him in jail over and over again until 2017? And the article treats him he was some sort of local folk hero? I think when someone becomes the local beloved homeless alcoholic, you should probably try to do something for them besides continually incarcerate them so they spend decades bouncing in and out of jail. Couldn’t Jimmy Kimmel have done something besides just invite him on his show?

You really get a sense of how inhuman our societies have become when you start paying attention to how absolutely deranged mainstream discourse about homelessness is. Like it genuinely feels like a lot of public commentators are incapable of thinking of homeless people as conscious beings with actual lived experiences.

Rest in peace Earl, you might have been imprisoned for so much of your life but now in your afterlife your free.

This is an awful story dressed up as a human interest one. He had a drinking problem almost his entire life and died in a facility.

A lot of people romanticize local news, but in reality it is some of the most useless, god-awful crap ever printed to paper or uploaded to the internet. At least it often is in its current state

Aside from the occasional useful profile of a local candidate, it consists of mostly crime news and boring human interest stories. The front page is often a headline about some nothing, boring local event, followed by what looks like a yearbook page of nothing but mugshots. Headlines usually look something like this:

"Sex offender arrested for indecent exposure"

"Nursing home resident killed in hit-and-run"

"Elementary school student suffers fatal allergic reaction during recess - Police investigating faculty for negligence"

"Police investigating groping incident in Walmart parking lot - Suspect still at large"

"Today marks 8th anniversary since the murder of a county deputy. Family struggles to move on"

"High school senior wins $1,000 sweepstakes - Says he'll spend it on a new laptop for college"

"Man bludgeons wife to death with frying pan, then uses murder weapon to cook dinner"

So in that context, this is the perfect story for local news.

What I find baffling about this story is how someone got arrested more than fifteen-hundred times in their lifetime.

Unfunny hacks like Kimmel are about as limolib as it gets, so of course not.

This is very common, studies that examine the factors and events which cause homelessness have the death of a caretaker or loved one as one of the leading causes of a person becoming homeless.

Seems pretty sad that a guy that most everyone interviewed in the story seemed to like spent so much of his life in jail.

I do kinda agree so I decided to actually test this out with my local news just by searching "mobile AL news", here's what I got for the top 10 stories (removing copies of the same story from multiple organizations)

"Faith leaders react to shocking sexual abuse allegations against Mobile-area pastor" 18 hrs ago
"Man killed in single vehicle accident at interstate exchange near Mobile" 5 hrs ago
"2 people injured in separate assaults in Mobile" 4 hrs ago
"Mobile police arrest 3 accused of stealing beer" 4 hrs ago
"Mobile City Council selects law firm to investigate Prine’s allegations" 3 hrs ago [Prine is the currently suspended police chief and is complaining the city is taking "improper control" of the police department, which sounds to me like he probably didn't like accountability measures put in place, or something like that. But I haven't looked into it deeply]
"‘Like coaching a college kid:’ Thompson sophomore Trent Seaborn is ‘complete’ QB" 6 hrs ago
"2 people injured in 2 dog attacks in east Alabama city in 1 day, reward offered" 6 hrs ago
"Could a new warehouse development draw a national company to Mobile?" 1 day ago
"Body found on Duncan Street in abandoned apartment building: Mobile Police" 1 day ago
"Caught on camera: A woman’s car catches fire in Mobile after a power line falls on the roof" 2 hrs ago

so yeah, aside from the police chief story, pretty much exactly what you said.
