Let's face it.

If Biden loses, he would end up being an incumbent president who ran against one of the most unpopular incumbents ever or opponents. And he would end up losing. Everyone agrees that Trump is a uniquely unpopular candidate who really should have no path of winning. If Biden loses, he would've messed up an otherwise very winnable situation.

If Trump loses, he would end up losing against a Carter-tier incumbent who is unpopular in dynamics and environment that should strongly favour him. The GOP would've lost an election they had no business losing in the first place.

Whoever loses would have had no business losing this one.

It does seem like neither side is trying to win.

It does seem like neither side is trying to win.

I don't think either one really wants the job itself.

Trump probably doesn't want to go back to work for 4 years, he's lazy, but he recognizes the Presidency is the only thing that can keep him from a long prison sentence.

Biden probably does not want to be working until he is 86 years old, but he'd become a pariah overnight if he didn't remain in the race at this point. It's too late to drop out with kneecapping the party's chances in November.

Similar to the major parties, both candidates are being propped up by the unpopularity of the other.

In an ideal world, yes.
