You realize the issue is the content of the speech, not the fact that he's a catholic who gave a commencement speech at a catholic university?

I know. And I have problems with it as a Catholic myself.

I mean for one thing, Catholic Teaching says that the celibate religious life is the highest calling. So what does he think about all those nuns and sisters who serve around the world ?

Are they any less because they had a vocaton not to get married ? Oh boy, all those nuns/sisters will be pissed.

Best response I’ve seen is that when women play football in lower levels (high school/college) it’s almost universally as a kicker.

It comes down to a lot of pro sports players are not the smartest and wouldn’t be doing any kind of skilled work (white or blue collar) without the sport. He could have easily went with a “some of you may choose a life of motherhood over a career, so what is right for you” instead he goes with the propaganda he’s been fed and would be one of the reasons women choose the bear.

I read this story with no prior knowledge of the personalities involved. The main impression that I took from it was that a lot of people who talk about politics online (and in this case from all sides) are working through Mommy issues.

When I search for further discussion, nothing stands out more than a pervasive obsession with the irony of his mother's academic pedigree and professional credentials.

Strangely satisfying to know there are men out there who somehow feel threatened by women like me, who will contribute far more to the world than they can ever dream Purple heart

It's a sad state of affairs that there are so many men-children out there whose masculinity is so fragile that they feel comfortable only when they keep women down.

The scary part is that an increasing number of young catholic men ( often converts too ) believe this. I'm a practicing Catholic, and they often take the popes's words out of context to support their viewpoints, often choosing quotes from church councils a hundred years prior.

The trad wife thing too. It's scary. There's a reason why Pope Francis restricted the Latin Mass in 2021.... He knows....

Now it doesn't mean i don't have my own criticisms of modern work culture, and how it prevents women and men from having happy families but that's different than what Harrison Butker is implying.

His speech wasn’t even traditional Catholic doctrine. It’s bigoted conservative evangelicalism with Catholic dressing.

It's sad that the left has allowed the right to monopolize Christianity, even with a liberal Pope. The 1950s Leave It to Beaver lifestyle isn't what Christ died for.

Relatively Liberal Pope. Remember Pope Francis himself says that he is a son of the Church, and he can't change church Doctrine. He is however far more pastoral than his precedessors.

No the big problem here is, the politicizaton of the Catholic Faith, and the hijacking of the Catholic Civil War about Vatican II ( going on for 60 years now ) by the Republican Party and their donors.

There's a reason why the Pope restricted the Latin Mass in 2021. He knows.

Like don't get me wrong. There are serious valid debates to be had about the implemention of Vatican II. But when it gets tied up in Republican politics ? Yeah no....

As an aside, why do all of these f**kboys look the same nowadays?

Ugly unkempt beard
Vacant lead paint stare
Proud Boys haircut

This cuck thinks he's an alpha male but he's probably sh**tting his pants when he has to drive his oversized truck briefly through an urban area to get to the Chiefs' practice facility.

He says being a mom is more important than having a career or education, but being a father isn't? These guys never seem to value fatherhood much.

Conservative has conservative opinions and shares them with audience at conservative venue. News at 11.

Really pointless and kinda annoying to get worked up about this stuff. Yes, I'm sorry, there are many people in the country who disagree with you, and some of them have opinions that are quite gross. It's not worth it to fight against every single one of them once they get a microphone.

When the Republican Party has hijacked the Catholic Church in the US for it's own ends and when a church becomes a political arm of a political party, yeah it's right to talk about it.

Bizarre that the most obviously true part of his speech - “Being a mother and homemaker is important and rewarding, and you shouldn’t let your career get in the way of that if it’s what you really want” - is the most controversial. I’d think that the parts where he explicitly attacks political and church leaders would get more attention.

If he said parent then it wouldn’t have been as controversial. The role of a father is extremely important as well

From a Facebook friend:

Here's a theology lesson: For Christians, the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament presents (among other things) guidelines on how YOU should live... not on how you should control how OTHERS live. Any ‘church” that teaches otherwise is one you should run from.

If the New Testament gives guidelines on how you should live, those same guidelines can be applied to others. Your Facebook friend posted gibberish.

Ironically, St John Paul II ( no liberal whatsoever ) praised the feminine genius and the vocations of women, ALL VOCATIONS.

Why did he only reference women ? Why not take to ask fathers and males for their roles in parenting ? Cathoilc Teaching clearly emphasizes the role of both men and women, both the husband and the wife in creating a happy stable environment for their children. To get more theological, they are both pursuing holiness.
