Greg Abbott pardons Daniel Perry, man who killed a Black Lives Matter protester in 2020

Texas Gov. Greg Abbot issued a full pardon Thursday to a former U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder for fatally shooting an armed demonstrator in 2020 during nationwide protests against police violence and racial injustice.

Abbott announced the pardon just minutes after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles disclosed it had made a unanimous recommendation that Perry be pardoned and have his firearms rights restored. Perry has been held in state prison on a 25-year sentence since his conviction in 2023.

The Republican governor had previously ordered the board to review Daniel Perry’s case and said earlier that he would sign a pardon if recommended. The board, which is appointed by the governor, announced its unanimous recommendation in a message posted on the agency website and Abbott’s pardon swiftly followed.

It’s genuinely disgusting the extent to which Republicans wish to legalize the murder of people they disagree with.

Announcing your intention to commit a crime, and then committing that crime, is premeditation.

There's some ambiguity in the Rittenhouse case to where a jury found him not guilty. There's none in this case. Abbott is the worst of the worst as a human being in all of US politics.

So now we know that the facts don't matter as long as you're the white color or representing the right "cause."

Dule is fairly consistent. I would be very surprised if he defended Abbott’s decision here. I don’t remember him defending the murder at the time either.

It's now essentially legal to kill protesters in Texas, and alongside the new rules that the SOS is pushing for where an organizer is responsible for any disturbance at a protest they organize and it's pretty obvious that Republicans would rather move this state firmly into 'flawed democracy' territory before they allow their grasp to slip.

I've said before that someone with his background and temperament basically never had a chance. If anything, he got lucky that one of his spates of antisocial behavior acquired a political valence that gave him 15 minutes of fame he could monetize.

He's 21 and still hasn't made any progress toward completing a college degree, was deemed unfit for military service, has visibly put on weight, and is going to develop some sort of substance use issue if he hasn't already.
