And how.

Anyway, Noem's takeaway from this story, which she intends also to be the reader's takeaway, is as concerning as anything else here. She doesn't exactly talk about Cricket like Old Yeller.

Yeah… Old Yeller was written from the rural perspective, pretty old and conservative. And the dog had rabies and it was still a tragedy.

Failing to train the puppy then boasting and fundraising over killing it. FFS

What a disgusting human being.
How someone can justify this is beyond me. And then how she also killed the goat, the same way, because it would knock-over her kids, and dirty their clothes. Really?

I guess the chickens’ lives mean nothing to any of you.  What the dog did to them is evil.

You know it's bad when this post is apparently the best attempt at trolling you can come up with.

We should kill Kristi Noem’s political career in the same way she killed her dog.

I think she's killed both of them.

Remember how House of Cards started with Underwood killing a dog to show how cruel, calculating, and willing to do what they think is right

Atleast that dog was injured

Pointing to legal technicalities to defend your behavior should be a sign you’re doing something wrong

One of the most traumatic memories of my life is losing my dog. I was six. He got ran over by a car. He wasn't the best dog, objectively. He was a bit nippy at times despite being trained well (our other dog, throughout her 14 years of life, never once bit anyone). He got killed on the road back in 1997 yet I still miss him as he was my first friend.

This "woman" is deplorable and I hope she never sits anywhere close to power. Killing an animal shouldn't be something you brag about. It should be a decision that bothers your conscious and sits with you. Consider Old Yeller. In that story, the dog was rabid and killing him was a mercy, but, it was still treated and viewed as a heartbreaking moment.

This lady has no empathy. If you can't find it in your heart to understand smaller creatures, and your first resolve is to kill them, you have no heart. You have no empathy. You have no compassion. Someone without these qualities, regardless of their other qualifications, is absolutely and utterly unfit to be a heartbeat from the Presidency - regardless of party.

I was uncertain about voting at all this year, but if Trump picks her as his running mate, I will happily vote for Biden.

That this is even called a "controversy" is too far.

It should be 99.99% unanimous, against just a few crazies.

"Puppy killing controversy" -- I never thought I'd see those words together. "Puppy killing crime," "puppy-killing horror," "puppy-killing abuse," -- this should not be even referred to as a "controversy."

I think her main problem is that the details just make it increasingly worse, most people balk at killing a dog. But killing a untrained puppy for being untrained that’s worse, the fact that it’s expensive dog just make her look like rich person throwing expensive toys away, and ending it with her daughter asking about the dog clearly seeing it as a pet, make Kristi Noem look like there’s something fundamentally wrong with her, and to top it up when people become aware that this is in a book she wrote… well “it’s the weirdest f***ing thing” even the Trump campaign have seen.

Killing your dog and then writing about killing your dog and then bragging about it as a "politically incorrect" story to sell your book is such a depraved thing to do, not to mention how massive of a miscalculation it is.

"what do you mean shooting this random guy in the head in cold blood is a crime? I'm being prosecuted for being politically incorrect!!"

George Allen?

The closest I can think of is George Romney's "brainwashing" gaffe during his 1968 presidential campaign.  But in his defense, that was just an offhand remark by a tired candidate at the end of a long day; it wasn't a deliberate choice like Noem's.

He defended it initially. He apologized after two weeks of condemnation and ridicule.

Another thing worth noting is that, while political nerds are very familiar with Noem, this story has ballooned to the extent that this is probably how many people are learning of her for the first time.

I don’t know about that. She was already on the news quite a bit during the last few years.

This has to be one of the weirdest political miscalculations of recent times. Even worse than Elizabeth Warren trying to appeal to Latino voters by saying "Latinx".
