Quote
A bill prohibiting marriage between first cousins is headed to the Tennessee governor’s desk after the state house voted overwhelmingly to pass the measure Thursday.

Bill sponsor Democratic Rep. Darren Jernigan explained the bill would delete language in the law enacted by the state’s General Assembly in 1829, substituting “nor the child of a grandparent” with “nor the lineal descendant of a grandparent,” effectively prohibiting marriage between first cousins.

This is really odd to me.
Is there really an issue with this, and does it mainly exist in the South?

Good, I guess.  What would really impress me is if states ban child marriages as well which is still legal in 41 states.

There's also only two states where brother-sister and parent-son/daughter incest is legal (not legal for marriage but not explicitly banned.)

Nope....New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Next, Tennessee needs to ban sexual relations between first cousins.

Trump and Biden need to make this a campaign issue. I don't care what side they each take, I just want to hear those two debate this on stage.

Why do should they do such a ridiculous thing?

How exactly does it work in the "criminal" states? Would you go to prison if you apply for a marriage license between cousins?

What, no one here, in this thread, is shocked and/or appalled at this government tyranny? No one is calling this unconstitutional? What happened to It's unconstitutional for a state government to interfere with the fundamental right of adults to marry one another! We're talking about a human right, and states cannot try to regulate it!

I believe I voted 'egalitarian' on that poll, IIRC.

I'm still wondering about this. I agree that it seems like a solution in search of a problem until proven otherwise.

Cousin marriage undermines the underpinnings of our WEIRD society in a way that marriages that merely do not comport with traditional Judeo-Christian marriage rites do not.

To a large extent, the success of the West in general and of the United States in particular depends on people seeing themselves as members of nuclear families existing as citizens in community and society. If you introduce extended family or clan/tribe affinities into the equation, you get Pakistan.

I can't believe that no one noted that one Representative, Gino Bulso (R-Brentwood), was vehemently against this because his grandparents were cousins and even claimed that this law violated Obergefell.  It passed 75-2 with some abstentions.

That seems to be an identical argument to the one MarkD is making above. Are we sure he doesn't have skin in the game?
