Life was easily lost in early years of football.

This happened a few years after the bloodbath in 1905, but one death that always struck me was Jimmy Nippert, who played for the University of Cincinnati. He got cut on the field from somebody's cleats, and the cut became infected from chicken poop leftover from a pregame chicken race. (?) Several agonizing weeks in the hospital later, he died of lockjaw. What a dumb, awful way to die.
