Yeah, none of my kids will have a tablet, smartphone, or their own laptop until they can buy one for themselves. Not that I don't understand the temptation (and their school basically requires a school laptop starting from kindergarten).

I remember my brother was into that about 6 years ago, during his "incel" phase (thankfully long over); I thought it was stupid at the time and I'm honestly surprised that it seems to have cropped up again. It seems like a lot of stuff starts on 4chan or other unsavory parts of the internet (my brother also liked the "NPC meme" around 2019) before it gets adopted into some kind of mainstream for whatever reason.

I know it should be brainrot, but naming it brainroot has some sense as this type of subculture is nursing a good part of american and non-american kids and teens.
