I am friends with Biden voters but we get around it by not talking politics. Do you feel the same about us?

I'm OK with this, as long as political discussions are kept to a minimum. One of my previous tenants clearly had right-wing political leanings based on his social media posts, but I never talked politics with him.

Yes.  It's necessary for us to talk to one another if we're ever going to try to depolarize this country.

I think that's part of the problem.  Too much time spent in the bubble and not enough time spent with people you don't want to be around - and what you'd probably learn in an hour is that those people are actually people that are good to be around.

If we stopped thinking of ourselves as Democrats/liberals/left and Republicans/conservatives/right and more as neighbors that deserve basic common decency and respect, this country would be a better place.

If I get along with them, sure. Same with any potential friend.

Yes, I just went to the wedding of a friend who (albeit tepidly) supported Trump (but did not vote for him, he didn't vote at all the last 2 elections) and there were plenty of folks there who voted for Trump that I was still friendly with.

yes, it's hard sometimes not to constantly mock Trump in front of them.  I try to limit myself to once a week.

(I have had one friend stop supporting Trump in the past few months.  I forget which con was the straw that broke the camel's back.  It was after the NFTs and before the Bible con.  He's had so many obviously cash grabs from morons that it's hard to keep track.)

Hypothetically yes, but in practice their political views would almost certainly be symptoms for personal failings that would be harder for me to overlook.

Sanchez is a great example actually. He and I were on good terms for years, wouldn't call us friends but we got along. But I wasn't going to stop criticizing his politics, and of course his reaction was to make it personal. I suspect that's how it would go with most of these types.

Given that, going by the OP, 'Trump supporter' means merely a 'Trump voter', then of course. I'd have stronger reservations about those who hackishly post support for him every day on social media, although I tend to have similar feelings about anyone of any political persuasion who does that.

I saw a stupid post somewhere quite recently that no 'normal' Americans will vote for Trump. Of course many 'normal' Americans will vote for Trump. Anyone who's the nominee of one of the two major parties automatically has a big bank of 'normal' Americans on their side, for better or for worse.

I could be friends with them, sure. But the extent that we'd talk politics kind of depends on what kind of Trump supporter they are, since it can range to fairly passive supporter who likes his persona or some issues to full on Qanon cultist.

This, and while we discuss politics quite a bit, it's usually good-natured ribbing and not heated political debates (I tend to shy away from the latter because that is the stuff that ruins relationships).

If we avoid politics at all costs, and they are a less obnoxious one who don't adorn their car or house with hos merchandise.

I have yet to meet this kind of person.

What does this mean? If you’re a “Trumper”, you are by definition “political”.

Yeah I should rephrase this. My question was asking if you are cool with being friends with someone who voted Trump the last two times AND plans on doing so again in 2024, but is fine not talking about politics and you can discuss other things with them.

Ah, yeah, that changes things. Of course I'd try to change their mind but I know people are complicated and if they're not in the cult and don't try to justify the obviously heinous sh*t he's done, then that's probably enough to make friendship possible.

The Trump supporters I know IRL are:

1. A flat-earther
2. A convicted statutory rapist
3. An antisemitic tradcath who believes Jews are "vampires"
4. An insane woman who once tried to perform an exorcism on her grandson
5. An estranged relative who became a Christian Scientist who tries to treat her kids' illnesses with "herbal remedies"
6. A guy with a Charlottesville haircut who got fired from his law firm for making racist comments while drunk
7. A woman who interned for notorious killer Jason Ravnsborg
8. A ranch owner who verbally abuses her employees

I don't foreclose the possibility that I might one day meet one who's worth befriending. Hasn't happened yet though!

Friends, yes.
Close friends, almost certainly no. A big part of friendship is being open with each other and talking about all sorts of things. I would simply not feel comfortable talking about a lot of things with a Trump supporter.
