In November, 1971, President Richard M. Nixon stuns the nation and the world by announcing he will not be seeking another term as President, due to health concerns.

Vice President Spiro Agnew, knowing he faces potential conflict of interest charges from his days as Governor of Maryland, and fearing they would come out should he run, declines to run for the nomination.

Other big name Republicans, Senators Barry Goldwater, Chuck Percy, Bob Dole, Governor Nelson Rockefeller, all announce they have no interest in the nomination.

Subsequently, the Republicans end up nominating Senator Norris Cotton of New Hampshire, Senator since 1954, for President, and Governor Stanley Hathaway of Wyoming, Governor since 1967, for Vice President.

Seeing his chance, former Vice President, 1968 Democratic nominee, and again Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota wins the Democratic Presidential nomination.  Humphrey picks fellow Senator Henry Jackson of Washington for Vice President.

Is Humphrey able to realize his lifelong ambition of becoming President?

How does this election go?

If the Republican ticket had really been that weak, Humphrey could have won. Heck, McGovern might have had a chance against those two.
