It is interesting that Christmas is the only Christian holiday, that is a legal holiday everywhere in the US.

I don't know if any other days are a holiday in any individual states.

A lot of workers are off on Sundays anyway, so they don't have to work on Easter.

Do you work on Good Friday or on Easter weekend?

For anyone who calls themself Christian, it could be taken as a vacation day, if your company is ok with that.

As far as celebrating it, why would a non Christian celebrate it?
I am just wondering how you observe it.. other than going to Church.

No, because I don't see any point in mourning some random guy who was killed for his beliefs 2,000 years ago

My church does a Good Friday evening service that I always go to.  I don't get that day off (some years, we've had an informal early release, but not this year) and don't feel any conviction to need to take it as PTO.

I take Wednesday through Friday of Holy Week off to attend the services. Naturally this comes out of my vacation time since these aren't public holidays.

Is Good Friday not a public holiday in the US?

     Indeed it is not.

It is a public holiday in Canada. I wonder why not in the US.

In Canada (except Quebec, where the public holiday is Easter itself).

I work real holidays so of course I work the fake ones too.

And dead0man decides which holidays are "real," I am assuming.  *Rolls eyes*

Anyway, no, I don't really celebrate it ... other than giving some thought to its importance in Christianity.  With Easter right around the corner - which entailed our 3-month old's first Easter church service and a very delicious and boozy brunch with our friends afterward - we kind of save up for that.

I did when I was growing up. I can't remember how many services we attended throughout the week, but there were plenty, and Good Friday was especially important.

Everyone in my immediate family has left the Catholic Church since then. Also true for a large chunk of my extended family.

Gotta hand it to the Christians for calling the day their deity was nailed to a cross as "good". I suppose it would make me feel good too if the all-knowing all-powerful creator God of the universe personally died for my sins in a bloody execution. Oh wait, no it wouldn't.

The only thing I agree with the Christians on is that Jesus was an innocent man put to death by an intolerant regime. However, every one is still responsible for his own actions, no one can "save you", and undergoing a ritual where you confess your dedication to this crucified man does not make you any holier of a person than the millions of ignorant heathens. The more educated Christians will admit this, but they still believe they're going to heaven any way, because God "favored them" for unknown reasons in the pre-eternity before the world was made. Protestantism is certainly a fitting religion for the world of commerce.

'Good' in the context of Good Friday means holy. The etymology is well known to any reasonably well educated person.

It is literally called "Holy Friday" (Venerdì Santo) in Italian.
