In the 1970 Senate election he supported the anti war Democrat running against the pro-war incumbent Democrat running as an independent. The Republican won. In 1988, he defeated the Republican from the right. And in 2006 he was the pro-war incumbent running as an independent.

There was a type of revisionism that McCain received during his final years for opposing Trump and supporting Obamacare that Lieberman did not experience. In addition to that, he  (McCain) was also respected by many for being a war hero, even if some of that respect was suspended during his 2008 campaign.

He didn't sabotage the public option (which was already killed by the likes of Max Baucus and Ben Nelson) but he did kill the compromise alternative (Medicare buy in). Definitely one of those people who believed being a vain egotist was a mark of grand statemanship.
