it probably has more to do with a) the war and b) the personal rifts between McCain and the right than it does immigration, although all three are factors.

but remember john kerry came back from the dead in 2003/4 so who knows.

Kerry was just outshone by Dean, though. The Republican primary voters have more reason to dislike McCain than simply that there's someone else more appealing.

I find it a little hard to believe that McCain is that low but clearly he is in a pretty bad way everywhere at this point.
