Polly Jean Harvey doesn't have a mass audience. She is a music artist for niches. Usually people don't hear about her through the mass media (although I included the option).
How did you know about her?

Probably around the time "Let England Shake" released, it got a lot of buzz on the music sites of the day. Somehow I never really listened to her though, even though I love Nick Cave (started listening to him a little later, when a Grinderman song was on True Detective). Might throw on Rid of Me or something later and report back with thoughts.

I'm a big Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds fan, so obviously through his "Murder Ballads" album. He was dating her at the time, and she contributed to some of the songs.

It was actually Pitchfork, which I believe is dead now.

Mum & stepdad I think had an album or two of her's, plus she shares a first name with my sister which enabled a connection.

"I want a pistol...

"I want a gun..."

Big Exit

All those songs from Fiona Apple to Sleater Kinney to Babes in Toyland to Seven Year Bitch were all about sexual assault.

Just sayin'
I love SK and Fiona Apple.

"Down by the Water" still got airplay on Kraut radio as late as 2016.

This is why I have so much soul.

She doesn't have a signature song, but "Down by the Water" is the closest song to have this definition. There is no clear hierarchy of PJ Harvey's hits. "Down by the Water" is a little bit more important than "To Bring You My Love", which is a little bit more important than other songs.

"The Wheel" is probably my favorite of her songs.

The information that she has already played in the German Democratic Republic blew my mind.
I always related her to the post-Cold War world.
