Subs like r/antiwork and r/latestagecapitalism constantly make front page. In pages that should be guided by numbers, like r/climate, posts praising the Chinese dictatorship and denouncing the US are widely liked, even though carbon emissions are increasing there and decreasing in the West.

The downvote system ensures only the consensus view is put out as well. Almost any positive remark on religion is downvoted to oblivion.

Seems more than a little unfair to socialists.

It's become de rigueur to blame the site's voting system, but Reddit hasn't always been this way, and its method of prioritizing content hasn't changed much over the past fifteen years or so, especially compared to other platforms. Other sites, most notably Hacker News, use similar voting systems without running into same issues.

That leads us to other potential causes: The site's changing user base is one, but there's also management.

Reddit has pretenses to being more democratic than other social media platforms. That's not something that I give much credence as I write this over a decade past the death of Aaron Schwartz. But that spirit was strong in the site's early days. It made the site more usable and more interesting, but it was also responsible for its reputation for hosting extreme content.

Today, it's become the last platform standing where many users still believe that they are, or even should be, in control. Maybe that explains its distinctive politics. It's a site for people who want to act like they've built something without actually doing anything.

No? It's political leanings are fairly balanced, there's a pretty large conservative bloc.

I thought Reddit had a bit of an edgy alt-lite reputation?

Like Atlas it's left-leaning, but overall it's a big tent.

Nah.
Atlas "left" includes a lot of centre left types that support Biden and Israel.

If anything putting r/antiwork on the front page is capitalist propaganda because it makes socialists look really, really dumb.

I thought Reddit had a bit of an edgy alt-lite reputation?

Pre Trump that was very much the case but since then they've gradually brought censorship in with increased concerns about "hate speech" and other things in that vein.

There are no good subs for socialists on Reddit. They all got ruined or pruned back in 2018-2020.

It's a free labor harvesting tool so that the owners can profit by selling your posts to train AI models.

The Chapo Trap House sub was fun to peak around just for the sheer chaos from the user base. I don't recall what event les Reddit to banning the sub from the site. Those were good times.
