When has such a vicious break happened on a former ticket. When Teddy Roosevelt ran against Taft in 1912?
John Nance Garner openly opposed some of FDR's policies as his sitting VP.

Garner also attempted to win the nomination over Roosevelt in 1940, which obviously failed.

     The interesting thing is that Pence stands entirely behind the record of Trump's previous term. He says that Trump is now pursuing a different agenda that is at odds with that. I'd be curious to hear him expound on this, but I doubt we will hear anything more out of Pence.
