Many pollsters (not all, obviously) typically don't start screening for LV until about Labor Day.  I assume their premise is that a large chunk of the electorate isn't tuned in until then.

I have mixed feelings about the use of recalled vote questions.  Obviously it's a point of interest, but there is also data that suggests some people either lie or simply misremember (generally for ego/social desirability reasons - some people like to believe, or at least pretend, they voted for the winner even if they didn't).
