In the 1960 election, Kennedy won only Honolulu and lost every other county to Nixon, but that was still enough to narrowly win the state. In 1980 Carter also narrowly won the state, but he did it in the exact opposite way; he won every county but Honolulu. Anybody have any clue why the parties every county voted for was the opposite during these two elections?

Hawaii tends to be concerned about foreign policy and have a lot of military veterans, so Reagan appealed to its largest city
