http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/11/teen.sex.case/index.html

A 21 year old in Georgia was sentenced to 10 years in prison for consensual sex he had with a 15 year old when he was 17.

Georgia law at the time considered this a felony with a minimum 10 year sentence and having to register as a sex offender.

A judge threw out the sentence and jury members have come out saying that they think the sentence is ridiculous, but their hands were tied.

Georgia's Attorney General has appealed the ruling by the judge, keeping Genarlow Wilson in prison.

Wow.  Georgia is f**ked.  Who is the AG representing?  What good does this do?  Just another case of extreme right wing laws putting the government in your bedroom.  Sure, stay out my pocket book.. but come on into my bedroom and tell me what positions I can use and how often and with whom I can do it.  HYPOCRITES.

IIRC the law is repealed by now, as well.

President Bush should just pardon Genarlow and get done with it.  Surely even GWB doesn't support the ridiculous 10 year sentence?

Also, I believe $1 million per month spent in prison would be an appropriate reparation to Genarlow upon his release.

It's a state crime, so the President does not have the authority to issue a pardon.

In that case Gov. Perdue should send the national guard to rescue him from prison and let the legal stuff sort itself out later.

I don't see why this isn't getting much coverage on CNN...this should be the top story of the day, and the media should be crucifing Georgia and the AG over this.

If Perdue (R) and the AG Thurbert Baker (D) got into a serious fight, it wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

i believe the law has been changed, but it still appears to be a crime in GA for teenagers to have consensual sex...even oral sex.

which seems a little stupid to me and shows when you take these morality laws too far.

An excellent argument against mandatory sentencing rules.

And Perdue would actually be the right one. Strange world.

It appears though that he has been offered some sort of plea deal. If he agrees to it, he'll most likely receive a reduced sentence covered by time already served, and not have to register as a sex offender.

Why doesn't Perdue just pardon him?

Because we have to protect the children, don't you know.  If he gets pardoned, that will clearly send the message that rape is okay.

It's everyone's Constitutional right to have sex with fifteen-year-olds, after all.

Why doesn't Perdue just pardon him?

Because (1) what he did was illegal then, and (2) because what he did seems to still be illegal now (albeit with a different punishment).  Pardoning is clearly not the correct legal course,  though I do believe he should have been let out of jail a long, long, long time ago.

A high school senior having sex with a high school sophmore shouldn't result in a ten-year jail sentence.

He's already served the amount of time he would've gotten under the new law though.

What lessons have we learned?

1)  Don't live in Georgia
2)  Maybe don't live in the entire southeastern U.S.
3)  Don't tape yourself at age 17 having sex with your 15 year old girlfriend.
4)  Vote for politicians that focus on things more important than what's going on with your genitals.

I'm offended by your insinuation that there is anything more important.
