Considering that it was his home state, I am surprised that Theodore Roosevelt got third place in NY in 1912 (even behind Taft!), not winning a single county in that election.

He didn't receive the support of the NY State Republican Party or most traditional Republican voters, so most Republican voters stuck with their party's official nominee in Taft.

The difference between Taft and TR in the state was just 4% (29 to 25), and Rosevelt finished ahead of Taft in New York City. That didn’t threaten Wilson’s first place finish in the city (that’s been heavily Democratic for much of its history), and traditional Republican strongholds Upstate remained loyal to Taft, resulting in a county map that made the statewide finish for second place in New York appear more lopsided than it actually was.

Only loosely related to the topic of this thread, but I also noticed that this election would be the only time Long Island (Nassau & Suffolk Counties) would vote Democratic until the big LBJ landslide in 1964.
