Would you say Arizona is more like NM or Texas? I was asking given that all of them are border states and while Arizona has a climate more like NM, it has one very large city, one large city, and several medium sized city. Arizona also votes inbetween the two.

I'd say more similar to NM though neither are perfect matches.

In AZ, things like the native American reservations just don't have clear equivalents in TX, and TX has a lot of things like notable Asian populations that just don't exist in AZ.

Texas west of Dallas County?

AZ just doesn't have the Southern cultural influence that TX has.

It's also too metropolitan to be like NM.

Colorado is honestly a closer comparison despite the different politics and demographics. (Big city metro  and significant second city with a mix of rural areas).

What about Arizona's similarities regarding New Mexico vs. California?

I've always felt like Colorado was the best comparison. Both states are roughly the same size geographically and population. They have a major metro (Denver and Phoenix) followed by multiple smaller (but noticeable cities). The climate is very different, but both states are heavily mountainous and are known for their scenery. Nevada isn't a bad comparison either with Las Vegas and Phoenix vs Reno/Carson City and Tuscon.
