It's because the physical casinos don't want online competition.

I would never support US-based sports betting sites, both because they're American and because many of them started off as what were essentially illegal gambling operations. The only betting sites I have accounts on in the US are for horses, which are parimutuel and have always been legal.

I do have accounts at some of the big British and Swedish/Maltese sites.

Highly or lightly is rather subjective, should be one for gamble moderately.   I do bet on sports on pretty much a daily basis, but generally in the range of $25-$50, a little higher on Sunday's during football season.   With that said, I only bet with $$ I can afford to lose.

Pre-COVID, I won almost $2,000 on online sports gambling. Fortunately, I took my deposit out because once COVID hit and there were no more sports to gamble on, I was left with just roulette, which did not end well for my gains.

I opened a much smaller stakes account this year for the bonus. My two 'big' bets (still pretty small) cashed (Iowa-Minnesota Under and Green Bay Packers over Dallas Cowboys), and I've really just been slowly chipping away at the free bets in $1-2 increments to try to slightly outpace the expected value of the free money they gave me. Plus it's always fun to put $1 of my own money on a Friday night low-level college hoops game I know little about. But I am way over any material gambling at this point in my life.

I made a tidy sum on matched betting some years ago, basically a guaranteed way of making money on such sites if you know what you are doing. And yes, it's entirely legal (if morally dubious blah blah blah), at least where I am. However, the betting sites will likely catch onto what you are doing eventually and clip your wings by restricting your stakes or banning you outright.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matched_betting

I've also dabbled in betting exchange trading. Again, it's entirely legal. Basically it works in a similar way to the stock market. Far more difficult than matched betting though and I've never really made money in it.

Rarely used them for what would be considered actual gambling.

The explosion of online gambling in the US is kind of like vaping or legal marijuana - it went from zero to to the wild west seemingly overnight, and I expect it to get further restricted over time, just like with vaping. Most major European markets imposed significant restrictions (e.g., ban on autoplay, max stake, deposit limit, signup bonuses) after the COVID-induced explosion in online gambling... and European casinos always had "fairer" games than American ones to begin with.

I fully expect to see an American version of "This is the Ladbrokes life" on TV or social media at some point in the nearish future.

The history of this in the UK, specifically in relation to football, is curious. Of course sports betting has much deeper cultural roots here than in America -- though the strongest association was traditionally with horse racing, rather than football -- but my recollection is that the football betting advertising bonanza only took off in the late 2000s, reaching fever pitch in the mid-2010s. It was essentially unrestricted for a shockingly long time, but of course now the bookies have to stick 'when the fun stops, stop' on all their ads, and indeed, many voluntarily run ads advocating responsible gambling (I suspect to try and convince legislators that they can sufficiently self-regulate without any legal restrictions). And come 2026-27, it will be the end of an era, as all Premier League clubs have agreed to stop having betting shirt sponsors. Still, there is still a lot of advertising, and I do wonder if and when the day will come when betting is treated more similarly to tobacco in that regard.

I gambled only once with R$150,00 but on a reality show result, with a bit over 4.00 odds and won R$631,50 back.

Not a gambler but I did it this one time because I was confident about the result being different than the ones betting sites were expecting.

They predicted Fernanda from BBB 24 to be eliminated with her odds being 1.20 to be evicted. Other options were Deniziane with 4.20 odds and Matteus with over 100.00.

I sensed Deniziane would be eliminated because of the online commotion to save Fernanda despite her rejection with a good chunk of the public for being the perceived “villain”. And I was right, Deniziane got evicted despite being part of the supposedly “good guys” team.

I also did it because I love Fernanda because of her trashy mouth, she’s very funny, so I was rooting for her to stay in the house to keep humiliating her rivals.

No, but sometimes I play free online poker just in case I ever get invited to a high-end casino by a Bond villain.

if it's kept you entertained, that's a very reasonable price for a hobby.  Some people, as you know, spend far more than that just to do a thing a few times a year.

Yup, its exactly that a hobby that is entertaining.   I do stupid things like bet on the Islanders, but all in all never play around with funds I can't afford to lose or get in over my head.  General feeling is if I win great, but not expecting it and here is something fun that I'm okay spending some $$ on, but not doing enough to have any impact on my lifestyle

Yeah but it was way back in 2011, way before these things got popular, I put $50 in to 5DIMES it was, I think I got $5 free, bet NFL all season, ended up with basically $50 left at the end of the season lol, let it sit there until college basketball conference tournaments heated up, placed two bets and doubled my money twice, ended up with like $257. I felt cool getting my money order from the Caymun islands via Western union on a Monday morning at the convenience store lol

I don't bet anymore with books, it is a fools errand
