I think that would have been an interesting matchup: Senator Charles Sumner, leader of the Radical Republicans, facing off against President Andrew Johnson as Democratic nominee. Sumner would have been more controversial than the popular Grant, but I'm not sure it's enough for Johnson to pull it off and win a term of his own.

What do you think?

Sumner wins by a landslide, as the impeachment attempt against Johnson made him a lame duck.
