Really bad. Gallagher was considered a future Senate Candidate to replace Ron Johnson.

That’s arguably the only A-lister name on the future WI statewide bench.

Yeah Ron Johnson will likely be the last GOP senator in WI for a while.

A redraw moving the seat into Oshkosh could flip if they nominate a really bad candidate like Alex Bruesewitz.

He’s only 39 too.

Keep an eye on the state legislative maps which could be implemented in the coming weeks,  cause there will likely be many Republicans without districts looking for places to go.

Especially if then later on the congressional lines get redrawn as well,  leading this seat likely to collect all the cities in the NE of the state and become potentially competitive.

There are still trends favoring the GOP in Wisconsin, and the state will remain close at the presidential level. Gallagher is retiring only because he's being primaried.

I wonder if this brings a Senate bid back on the table.

And he’s only been in office since 2017.

I think his vote against impeachment was his test to see if he could behave like a sensible person and still be acceptable in the GOP and obviously the answer is no

Who else could replace Ron Johnson in 2028 if not Gallagher. This is a Major Blow for the GOP. The only other Candidate who is Statewide Material is Bryan Steil but he might not be an elected Officeholder by 2028.

Really bad. Gallagher was considered a future Senate Candidate to replace Ron Johnson.

He still is one; he's served in the House 8 years, has pretty clear accomplishments to tout from that service, and is only 39. If he decides that the current chaos isn't worth it, then that's a loss to the House GOP but it doesn't have to be a loss to WIGOP's bench. Nobody will care about Alejandro Mayorkas the second that Biden leaves office.

Keep an eye on the state legislative maps which could be implemented in the coming weeks,  cause there will likely be many Republicans without districts looking for places to go.

Yeah, I could see this primary ending up really chaotic.

If the likes of Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Kean, David Valadao, and Don Bacon are still around in 2024 they could shut down MAGA all on their own if the senate majority is narrow.

It would be funny if it weren't just sad and pathetic.

Gallagher tried to be a serious or at least somewhat serious person. To have some sort of concern with substantive policy. To care about the national interest.

But that's just not acceptable behavior in the Trump Republican party.

Only clowns need apply.

Wouldn't be surprised if he goes for Governor in 2026, it would've been a bit harder for him running while still an incumbent in the 'swamp'.

Dude is largely DOA in a future Republican primary because he's against impeaching Mayorkas.

Dude is largely DOA in a future Republican primary because he's against impeaching Mayorkas.

This isn't like impeaching Trump (NB some of those people have managed to weather the storm); literally nobody will remember Mayorkas once he leaves office. Also McClintock cast the same vote, rushed to do damage control, and seems like he will be fine.

Gallagher is pretty clearly just sick of the current culture of the House and doesn't have the energy to do what he needs to do to stay in office. In no way does that preclude him from running for something 5-10 years from now.

Wouldn't be surprised if he goes for Governor in 2026, it would've been a bit harder for him running while still an incumbent in the 'swamp'.

He's a big foreign policy guy. Very easy to see him running to succeed RoJo in 2028. But he's also young enough that he wouldn't even be an implausible Senate candidate in the 2050s. (Gallagher won't be the same age that Peter Welch, the oldest 2022 Senate freshman, was at time of election until 2059, so anytime before that is perfectly precedented.)

Surprised he's just retiring and not running for Senate. And if this is about the redraw, even if WI-08 gets drawn to be more competitive, it would still have an R lean and Gallagher overperforms anyway, so he would be fine.

It's not just about the Redraw many Rs are retiring because Ds are fav to win the H and they don't want to be in minority and possibly a Filibuster proof minority of Ds keep the S

I have to go review the exact schedule of special elections, but I think this means there'll be a brief period in May where the House is exactly tied? We're 1-2 Republican resignations away from Hakeem Jeffries getting to be Speaker for a few weeks at some point.

It doesn't get that bad but the GOP's majority could shrink to just 217-214 once Dems win April's special election for safely blue NY-26.
