Going by voting patterns here are my guesses on each:

Norwegian: Used to go Democrat, now lean GOP but some residual Dem support.  Many Obama-Trump voters, but some Romney-Biden in Twin cities metro area.

Swedish: Fairly similar to Norwegians but slightly more in blue states thus Trump likely won but closer than white vote overall.

Finnish: Used to be solidly Democrat, but has of recent swung hard towards GOP (WWC) but mixed as Upper Peninsula of Michigan now solidly GOP, but Iron Range while closer still goes Democrat albeit by smaller margins than used to.  Bill Clinton likely won big here, Obama probably won as well but probably favored Trump.

Danish: This group more GOP although split between Mormon which is heavily GOP but Trump underperformed vs. non-Mormon lean GOP but not as lopsided.

German:  Obviously GOP but probably not that much more so than whites in general.  More rural, largest in Midwest so not in most liberal areas, but also not big in Deep South where Democrats do weakest amongst whites.  Likely more Obama-Trump than Romney-Biden voters but went GOP in all elections since 2000 at least.

Dutch: One of the most heavily GOP groups as many are very religious.  However Dutch Reformed much like Mormons tend to be more educated and unlike White Evangelicals many turned off by Trump so Trump still won there, but probably only got around 60%, not usual 70-75% GOP gets.

Belgians: Only Wisconsin has large numbers, but likely Obama-Trump although Biden did win Door County narrowly.  Obama 2008 definitely won here, 2012 toss up, but Trump in last two.

English: Overall like white vote but real mix.  Pacific Northwest and New England high for this group and where Democrats strongest amongst whites.  But in Deep South most in lowlands are of English descent although many identify as American and strongly GOP as well as most Mormons English.  Probably though group that has highest number of Romney-Biden voters as more likely to have college degree.

Welsh: Overall GOP, but strongly GOP amongst Mormon, non-Mormon mixed as many blue collar but also a fair number in New England and Pacific Northwest.

Scottish: Democrats may have won this as strong in New England and Pacific Northwest although also strong in Utah.  Probably won at least the non-Mormon ones.

Scots-Irish: Probably nowadays strongest group for GOP amongst whites.  Bill Clinton may have won here due to strong support amongst whites in Appalachia, but Trump likely got over 70% amongst this group.

Irish: Overall favors GOP like whites in general, but many are actually Scots-Irish.  Of Irish Catholics, quite possible Biden won them not withstanding his Irish heritage, Democrats have generally been strong in this community.  But some Obama-Trump too and Romney-Biden depending on whether blue or white collar.

French/French-Canadians: Used to be Democrat but Cajuns swung GOP in 2000 and now massively GOP.  Elsewhere may still lean Democrat in New England states, but lots of Obama-Trump voters and probably vote more GOP than whites in general in New England.  Tend to be more blue collar.

Swiss: GOP but division between Mormons who went heavily GOP and non-Mormons as more mixed.  Driftless area is where highest and Obama won this while swung to Trump, Biden still had rather strong second place despite its rural nature.  That being said many German-Americans may in fact be from Switzerland, although most not.

Portuguese: Not only did this group usually go Democrat but often over 60%.  In Rhode Island and Massachusetts definitely has swung towards GOP but Biden still probably narrowly won here.  In California opposite as mostly in Central Valley, but that is probably where most likely to go GOP.  In Hawaii solidly Democrat but close to state wide average as Hawaii is not just on ethnicity but even on race probably least racially polarized state.

Spanish: Most are Hispanic and New Mexico only state where significant numbers and thus heavily Democrat.  But Tejanos in Texas probably largely Spanish ancestry with a little bit of Native American and while still Democrat, swung hard towards GOP in 2020.  Cubans although identified as Cuban are mostly of Spanish ancestry and they favor GOP.

Italian: Used to go Democrat but now GOP and in New York and New Jersey probably after Haredi Jews, most GOP group.  Massachusetts and California likely favor Democrats but most only partially Italian so Italian only solidly GOP, but Italian and other European more likely to be Democrat.

Greek: Mixed, but Tarpon Springs went GOP and in NYC areas where large, GOP does well.  But in Chicago and Boston, probably Democrat.

Lithuanian: Jewish obviously Democrat but non-Jewish a mix as large in Central Massachusetts so Democrat, but also large in Chicago where mix as more working class and large in Pennsylvania where used to Democrat but swung GOP (WWC).

Russian: Democrat overall only because most are likely Jewish but amongst non-Jewish Russians and Russian immigrants likely GOP.  Trump won big in Little Russia precincts in New York City.

Ukrainian: Probably Democrat and I suspect with many Trumpers being pro-Putin probably see Trump do worse amongst this group.  Still amongst those born in US of Ukrainian ancestry likely divide between Jewish who are Democrat and non-Jewish who lean GOP (but most in Eastern US, not Plains like in Canada).

Polish: Historically Democrat but a lot are white working class so probably swung GOP.  Lots of Obama-Trump voters here but still Democrats did better than whites overall due to simple fact mostly in Great Lakes and Northeast where Democrats stronger amongst whites.  Now possible Biden won those descended from Poland as I suspect a fair number of Jews originate from Poland in US.

Czech: GOP as largest in Plains and rural Midwest but Democrats historically did better with them than other whites but now vote same way.

Slovaks: Historically strongly Democrat as Bill Clinton definitely won them, Obama maybe, but definitely backed Trump.  Lots in SW Pennsylvania which swung before Obama, but many in Northeastern Ohio which swung after Obama.

Hungarian: Amongst non-Jewish, probably narrowly Obama but then swung Trump as mostly WWC in Great Lakes.  Amongst Jewish though hard to say as I believe a lot of Haredi Jews are of Hungarian ancestry so that is one case where GOP may have won, perhaps quite strongly.

Slovenian: Mostly in Cleveland metro area and appears areas strongest in saw strong swings from Obama to Trump so good chance Obama won this cohort, but then swung to Trump.

Romanian:  While not large enough to say for sure, I believe many American Jews are originally from Romania so my guess is most Americans with heritage from Romania are Jewish thus Democrat.  Amongst Romanian Orthodox too small to know.

Bosnian: Only St. Louis has large numbers, but considering most are Muslim and most Islamophobes vote GOP, guessing solidly Democrat.

Armenian: Democrat but probably backed Reagan in 80s.  Mostly concentrated in Los Angeles area which like much of California has swung heavily Democrat over past 40 years.

Arabs:  US classifies them as white and biggest concentration in Dearborn so pretty sure have gone solidly Democrat since 2004.  But Bush probably won here in 2000.  Apparently Liebermann being Jewish was not too popular in Arab community.  At same time Iraq war likely turned them towards Democrats in 2004.  I believe GOP dropped almost 20% in Dearborn in 2004.  Also should note more are Christian than Muslim in US so I suspect Arab Christians more likely to go GOP (Still favor Dems) than Arab Muslims.

Iranians: Democrat, but GOP probably did well here as largely concentrated in Los Angeles area which is heavily Democrat, Beverly Hills which has highest concentration, Trump got over 40%.  Wouldn't be shocked if Trump wins this cohort in 2024.

With no "American" option, most have opted for English.  Over 40% of English respondents live in the South.  5% of English respondents are in New England and 3% in Mormon-heavy Utah/Idaho.

Okay then heavy GOP although seems areas with heaviest GOP to Democrat swing have large number of English ancestry, but probably right about how overall heavily GOP.  But probably also divide between those who arrived in colonial times and those since.  Those descendants from colonial times like strongly GOP while English since probably more mixed.

Danish, Scottish, and Welsh also higher in Mormon areas.  I don't think every really took off in Germany although many Germans were from Anabaptist religions which faced persecution.  You also had groups like Amish, Hutterites, and Mennonites with German origins.

Is there any reason Mormons tend to be disproportionately English?

Mormons are very into genealogy as part of their theology of baptizing the dead, so Mormons usually have significantly more knowledge of their own ancestors than non-Mormons. That means fewer "American" identifiers.

I think they got a lot of converts in the U.K. early on too, who pretty much all emigrated.

The LDS Church sent missionaries to many European countries in the 1840s and 1850s, but they found more success in Denmark than in most European countries mostly due to good timing. LDS missionaries first arrived in Denmark in 1850. Just two years earlier, the Revolutions of 1848 had swept through central Europe and had an especially large impact in Demark. King Christian VIII died in 1848, leading to the implementation of a constitutional monarchy in 1849. Part of this change was the enshrinement of religious freedom into law for the first time in Danish history, a consequence of a growing Baptist and restorationist movement in Denmark which had been previously repressed by the Lutheran church. The missionaries therefore found fertile ground the following year for conversions and these conversions often led to emigration to the United States.

A lot of direct immigration from Britain to Utah.  One quarter of the population in Utah Territory was British-born.

While looking at the partisan leanings of these groups are interesting, a lot of it now comes down to the urban/suburban/rural split, in addition to education breakdown. Like I imagine folks with a Scandinavian ancestry in urban/suburban areas are some of the most liberal leaning white folks in the country. Problem is its really hard to break this down as people don't live in homogenized urban communities by ancestry.

Very true and per capita most white ancestries largest in rural areas which outside New England are largely GOP and often by big margins.  I imagine with pretty much every white ethnic group, GOP dominates rural areas, Democrats urban while suburban more a mix although in some places like Southern US, whites still vote heavily Republican and suburbs only competitive or Democrat as they are very diverse and have larger non-white populations than most in Northern US do.  Still GOP is not getting quite the lopsided margins amongst suburban whites in South as once did which also plays a role in counties flipping.  Outside South however, suburban whites pretty much split down middle leaning Democrat in West Coast, Colorado, and most of Northeast (outside your heavily Italian ones like Staten Island).  Midwest Suburban whites probably split down middle but working class lean GOP, white collar more Democrat.

However some ethnic groups have a tendency to be more blue collar while white collar I find tends to be overrepresented often by mixed or the larger ones.  And even then would very by state.  Germans may lean Republican but in Pacific Northwest, California and maybe even Minnesota as well as New England probably lean Democrat.  Italian Americans also Republican but in Massachusetts and California likely Democrat.  And for Dutch Americans the heavy Republican lean is more in areas they are numerous in.  In areas where only 1-2% I suspect probably vote same way whites in areas in general do.  Some smaller groups however more concentrated in a few areas like Slovaks (vast majority in Ohio and Pennsylvania) or Portuguese (almost all in Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island) or some even in a single metro area like Armenians (Los Angeles), Slovenians (Cleveland), Bosnians (St. Louis).  Larger ones off course more spread out over US as a whole and less concentrated.

Well, where is there some variation in voting among whites and where is there little or no difference?  It seems like in the Northeast there is variation with Italians in particular standing out.  Elsewhere, much less so.  It's not like German Americans and Scandinavian Americans in Minneapolis-St. Paul are living in different areas with distinctive voting patterns.

I would say largely true.  Historically differences were more pronounced but today any difference is probably more based on what part of state live in and educational attainment.

One nice thing about this census is you don't have back to 1980 to get a sense of the English ancestry population (yes the 1980 census did a better job than the Census Bureau has been doing in capturing it as of late).

Interesting (but not surprising) that some bordering states have the exact same 1-5 ranking. It would also be interesting to see for each ancestry group, which states are the highest % Italian/Irish, etc.?

Spanish white should be included, especially since French Canadians are mixed with French.
