Very positive. Lots of graffiti artists are very talented, and it adds greatly to th aesthetic value of an area. Suburban areas with no graffiti look drab and lifeless.

Negative.  The vast majority of graffiti is tacky and ugly, and just degrades the overall atmosphere.  We have a lot of murals and other stuff that gets painted downtown, and I can't stand it when some idiot decides that they need to spraypaint some stock, unintelligible thing overtop of it.

If an owner of a building would like their wall painted, they can contract someone to do it professionally.

I doubt my landlord contracted whoever did that stuff on the buildings behind me, but I think they look much better now.

So you don't think that the owners of buildings should have a right to control what their building looks like?

Graffiti very rarely has any artistic value. The times when it does are neither common enough nor beautiful enough to counteract the negativity of most graffiti. Negative.

Neutral. It can be gaudy and stupid or it can be magnificent depending on a lot of different factors.

If it's legal, it's alright. I believe Ottawa has some legal areas for graffiti. Otherwise, it's vandalism and that's just stupid.

Negative. Most of it's vandalism, little of it has any artistic value (regardless of the talent of the one who did it), and most of it is ugly.

I mostly like it, but what I don't get is why they don't paint more pornographic stuff.

Negative.  True that some graffiti artists are extremely talented and that they can add to the asthetic of certain areas, but some are also terrible.  I guess the way I feel about it is if you own it or if the owner has asked you to do it then ok.  But otherwise the owner you have "decorated" should have the right to come to your home and urinate on your curtains (ala Andy Warhol).

I like graffiti (it's an interest of mine), but not if it's vandalism, unless it's really good.. Generally illegal graffiti isn't, it's almost always tagging which is stupid.. So..

Graffiti: Postive
Tagging: Negative

I have to agree with the idea that I love graffiti....when its good graffiti. When its done with truly artistic purposes, it is a great thing. When it is done for vandalism/tagging, it is a destruction of city structure.

Tell me, what percentage of graffiti do you think is done for "artistic purposes". No more than 1-2%, certainly.

And even then, it's still altering the appearance of property against the wishes of the owners.

Oh I like the graffiti, that is not to say that it should be legal. If I were the owner, I wouldnt want it to happen to me. They should create walls for graffiti only. (Idealistic, I know Cheesy)

Actually, some towns do do that.

Sweet! Unfortunately, that is, Im sure, one of those projects that probably ended up proving that it wont effect illegal graffiti.

Neutral. It can be gaudy and stupid or it can be magnificent depending on a lot of different factors.

agree.

BRTD, it would be a blanket and false thing to say that "there's no graffiti in the suburbs", you just have to know where to look Wink

Tagging is horrible. Graffiti can be good.

One of my friends is trying to set up an "Urban Art Club" at school.

That seems reasonable. I'm not a fan of the kids who tag up the insides of buses, but I've seen lots of cool graffiti.
