It’s actually amazing how House Republicans likely are going to kill the best immigration deal they’ll ever get (even better than anything in a post-Trump win world) just to keep it as an election issue and pander to the Putin simp caucus

I just hope Biden's team is going to cut a bunch of great ads on that.

They should also point out that Trump has failed to actually solve the issue because he didn't take Schumer's offer for more border security funding in exchange for a legislative solution on DACA (both measures are popular).

They're also using the border as an excuse not to pass more aid for Ukraine. They want to do Putin a favor and embarrass Biden in the world stage. The Democrats should also attack them as un-American to side with a former KGB agent over their own president just because he's a Democrat.

NEWS - @LeaderMcConnell raises doubts about whether Senate Republicans should move ahead with border security-Ukraine aid deal.

He told GOP senators “The politics of this have changed,” and noted Trump wants to run on immigration.

“We are in a quandary,” McConnell said

McConnell read out a quote from Trump criticizing the proposed border security-immigration policy changes.

Called Trump “the nominee” and said “We don’t want yo do anything to undermine him.”

This is McConnell reading the mood of his conference and the GOP nationally

Oh wow, they're not even pretending to hide it.

Dear Mitch:

If the "politics have changed" on immigration, then I don't know...maybe pass a standalone Ukraine funding package?

It's almost like this drawn out saga would have never happened if Republicans hadn't tied funding Ukraine to border security.

This is what happens when there's a strong faction of bad-faith, de facto terrorists like the GOP in government, whose goals are opposed to the continued existence of a functioning government, and everyone insists on pretending that they're something else. We're turning into first-world Lebanon at an accelerating rate. (Like the Roman Empire, or post-Soviet Russia, the United States has enough mass, enough inertia, to continue moving even after becoming a failed state, but that is where we are headed, and we're getting deeper into extinction debt by the day.)

Ukraine easily has an outright majority in the House, majority of the majority rule is so toxic. Discharge petition?

B/c of the absurdity of our political system, the best chance more Ukraine aid has of passing is ironically if trump were to be elected again. Then Democrats, whether they be in the minority or the majority, could then hold any and every single piece of policy legislation or funding bill hostage until the republicans and trump agreed to more Ukraine aid attached to said bill. The party of Putin is not going to let more pro-democracy aid pass while they control the House and Biden is in the White House. They desperately want their terrorist, fascist icon Putin to kill more civilians and abduct more children.

Another typically hypocritical Trump position. There's an "unsustainable invasion" of our country happening right now, but Republicans in Congress shouldn't do anything about it right now unless they get everything they want. What even is an "essentially 'PERFECT'" border? The Berlin wall, Korean DMZ?

"After urging GOP allies in the Senate not to back it, Trump confirms he's against the emerging border deal: "We need a Strong, Powerful, and essentially 'PERFECT' Border and, unless we get that, we are better off not making a Deal, even if that pushes our Country to temporarily 'close up' for a while, because it will end up closing anyway with the unsustainable Invasion that is currently taking place...""

Apparently there is serious traction for tying aid to the next CR with Johnson being a dick about the border

I expect the GOP will block any sort of bill so they can blame Biden for the disfunction leading up to the election no matter how much it hurts the country.

The speaker and majority leader (in the senate) are way too powerful when it comes to that.

Speaker Johnson: Senate border deal ‘dead on arrival’ in House

Quote
The Ukraine support, which has its own critics in the GOP, was coupled with border talks as a means of securing its passage. But the coupling has actually made it more difficult for the Ukraine support to move forward, due to seemingly intractable policy and political concerns related to the border talks.
Quote
Johnson’s message about the bill being “dead on arrival” in the House was also reiterated to Republican chiefs of staff Thursday by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s (R-La.) chief of staff.

House Republicans should just be honest at this point that they have zero desire to actually solve problems or do something about the border because they need it as campaign issue. Biden needs to call them out forcefully. It's not a serious governing party at all.

I suspect Ukraine does have a majority of the majority (which isn't even a rule just a tradition). But MTG will move to vacate Johnson if he brings it up.

If so, he stands a good chance of surviving her vacate attempt.

He added a comment to his original tweet that it's 1,400 not 14,000 asylum applications.

More details from Manu Raju:

"Under the soon-to-be-released package, the Department of Homeland Security would be granted new emergency authority to shut down the border if daily average migrant encounters reach 4,000 over a one-week span.

If migrant crossings increase above 5,000 on average per day on a given week, DHS would be *required* to close the border to migrants crossing illegally not entering at ports of entry."

"Moreover, if crossings exceed 8,500 in a single day, DHS would be required to close the border to migrants illegally crossing the border. Under the proposal, any migrant who tries to cross the border twice while it is closed would be banned from entering the US for one year."
