Suppose the McGovern-Fraser commission fails to get primary reforms and smoke filled rooms still decided the presidential nominee. Who would be the Republican and Democratic nominee in each race?

Well this is all if each year was separated rather than a different timeline. As the only reason Trump has the backing of much of the establishment is because he was president.

The issue with that is that most of the old-fashioned political machines, the aeformentioned bossisms that thrived on patronage, collapsed or were dramatically curtailed with civil service reform and the growth of the middle class. Nowadays it's just a less gouche establishment strongly influencing nominations by raising or withholding campaign funds.
