I know plenty of mentally ill people, and none of them are like trump.

And if you've met one mentally ill person, you have met exactly one mentally ill person.
The point is that using "mentally ill" as a pejorative is low key s**ty.

Confederates had the delusion that their way of life and tradition was being threatened. Republicans constantly complain how their way of life and tradition was being threatened. Seems similar.

After the 1964 Civil Rights Act, many white, conservative Southern Democrats became Republicans. The South had been mostly Democratic before 1964; it was mostly Republican after (Although on the local level continued to be heavily democratic for decades).
