I'm not talking the specific match ups that occurred in IRL, just the last year in which it would have been possible for any realistic Dem nominee to have carried it. Carter came extremely close in 1976, probably hampered only by his stance on energy hurting him in the Tulsa area. In 1988 it swung quite heavily Democratic, though Dukakis still lost it by 17 points. Obviously a candidate like Dukakis could never have carried it, but let's say Gore or Bentsen was the nominee in 1988 and the economy tanked, would it have been possible for the Dem to squeak out a victory then?
