George W. Bush
Wednesday, November 8th, 2000.
Texas Governor's Mansion.
3:37 AM, Austin, TX.

Bush could only stare at the results in sadness. He had lost the Presidential Election this year and it was because of the state of Florida. Gore had won the state 49.1-48.4, a .7 % margin that meant recounts would not be triggered. Of course, the call of Florida for Gore meant the election was a narrow 291 to 246 Electoral College Victory for the Vice President, now President-Elect of the United States. Maybe he could make a come back in 2004 depending on how the Gore Presidency went. At least Republicans won the House of Representatives and while the Senate was a draw, with the fact that a Republican would appoint Lieberman's appoint meant that Gore's term as President would face opposition from Congress. Maybe he could use that as a rallying cry against the Gore Presidency...nah, that wouldn't be fair to Jeb. His brother had been waiting patiently for that moment for years and he wasn't going to let this moment slip him by, especially now that his only real opposition for the nomination in 2004 was McCain.

The younger George Bush looked at the family and colleagues who surrounded him at this very moment. His father, his mother, all of his siblings except Jeb, his wife Laura, and his own children, and then at Dick, at Perry, at Powell, Rice, and Rumsfeld, and Rove as well. They had all been an excellent part of the campaign. In fact, one can say that they were the reason the campaign had went so well in the first place. This was little to no scandals that broke out, the rhetoric wasn't firery, and everything was cordial for the most part. The election was, in a sense, boring, but Bush preferred that. He wasn't a fire-stirrer. He was a peaceful man and was hoping that with what was currently going on, maybe he could make a run for the Senate in 2002 or even 2006 and do what even his father couldn't.

With a sigh, he clapped his hands and got out of his seat. "Alright, everyone." He began to speak. "Let's get ready for the concession speech. Someone handed me a phone and ring up the Vice President. I have to congratulate him on his victory tonight." He said as he walked to the edge of the room. "I want this to be a coming together moment, where we heal any partisan divides that occurred that election. No trickery or slimeyness in the Speech, understood?" Nods from everyone in the room. "Good. Now, I have to think a bit more on this.Let me know when everything is ready for me." And with that, he left the room to ruminate at what had occurred in the last 24 hours and how he lost the Presidency by only a couple thousand votes.

Why was fate so cruel?

Al Gore
Wednesday, November 8th, 2000.
The White House.
4:27 AM, Washington D. C., USA.

He had done it. He had been elected President of the United States.

He was now the Second Democrat to win them a third term in the White House after Roosevelt in 1940 and the second Incumbent Vice President to win the White House since George Herbert Walker Bush in 1988. Now he was going to continue the legacy left behind by his predecessor, Bill Clinton. Was it a messy legacy in some places? Yes, it was quite messy considering the stink of Lewinsky. However, Gore had made sure to distance himself enough from that and from the President to assure the public that he was his own man and an independent thinker.

And now, he was President-elect. What a joyous moment this was for him, for Tipper, and for his children. It was also a joyous moment for Bill, Hillary, their daughter, and Joe, Betty, and their children. He supposed he would spend the rest of the day celebrating but at the moment, he just wanted to rest. An Hour ago, he had received the call from Governor Bush congratulating him and ten minutes ago, he had finished his victory speech promising continued prosperity, hope, and peace into the new millennium. The Gore Presidency had technically just begun and it would only grow from there.
