Lean Mass. Mainly going on the governmental institutions are like the rest of New England, but the nonwhite and foreign-born numbers are also closer to Massachusetts than NJ. Anecdotally, I feel like NYC stretches its tentacles way more into NJ than Connecticut but also Philly has a stronger influence on NJ than Boston does on CT so maybe that’s a wash.

Fairfield County is very New Jersey/New York metro-like, but the rest of the state is decidedly New England. At least the parts I've been to.

New Jersey is a miniature New York whereas Connecticut is more of a mini-Massachusetts.

Connecticut is also a bit distinct from New Jersey in that its metros, especially Hartford, are more separate from NYC. Nothing quite so distinct from NYC/Philly in NJ, except maybe Atlantic City.

Both CT and NJ have strong Italian influences, Republican rural areas, and are generally overshadowed by two bigger neighbors.

However the biggest difference is New Jersey doesn’t truly have its own district Metro area, unless you county some along the Atlantic. Hartford, and arguably New Haven, are distinctly Connecticut’s
