no.

It introduces kids to drugs they otherwise wouldn't know existed and makes drugs a 'forbidden fruit', making them want the drugs more.  It wastes the childrens' class time that could be used for learning.  It wastes policemen's time by being in the classroom rather than in the patrolling the streets or doing other necessary policework.  It wastes taxpayer's money.  The program should be totally scrapped.  Responsibility of drug-education rests with the parents.

I think that research generally indicated that it wasn't effective, even counterproductive.

The war on drugs is a farce initially started for racist reasons and continued for health nut and christian prudery reasons.

No, it doesn't.  They exaggerate the dangers of smoking marijuana and other pretty safe drugs.  I just think it'd be better to teach kids how to resist peer pressure and the real dangers of doing drugs, but not over exaggerating.

No, but I thought it was fun.  Better than regular 5th grade class back in the day.

I don't really know, since I don't follow those statistics.  I'm sure it has worked to keep some off of drugs, but they probably weren't really going to use them to begin with.  Just like those that use them now probably were going to use them before being introduced to DARE.

No, not really.  I don't think it's damaging either, though.

Yeah, it was.  We cared more about collecting stickers and holding Daren or whatever that lion was called.

Total joke.  It was even more lame in high school.

This gives rise to a much more important question for any hipsters among us:

Are old 'DARE' T-shirts at the thrift store cool in an ironic way or just unpurchasables?  (presumabely the same rational might apply to religious T-shirts).

My friend and I threw a huge party for senior year graduation, and he wanted to bring this kid over. Well, he brought the kid and he was wearing one of those DARE shirts. We told him that he had to burn it or leave. Long story short, we ended up setting it ablaze in the back yard and starting a bonfire comprised of various clothes, books, bottles, trash, and bad new aged rock CDs.

Well, it's the end of the world.  The AntiChrist is coming - I agree w/ Straha.

Just up the punishment a lot and let the parents deal w/ it if their kid is in jail for 10 years.

How did the kid harm anybody else except himself by taking drugs?

Presumably his Parents - emotionally. Perhaps his friends around him - if they weren't on drugs. It's stupid to equate harm just to mere physical pain.

Oh, and how the hell should I know about D.A.R.E? What I do know is that the War on Drugs has been about as successful as the War on Terror (or is it Terrahhh..?) and that's pretty good going considering the two sides you're up against in your - no, our - two wars against abstract concepts.

Inks, are you really 17? If so, you must have led one sheltered life, I feel sorry for you in a certain way..

He's like being drunk - he could harm someone.

People on drugs don't usually hurry and hand in their drivers' licenses.

What if he took drugs and didn't harm someone? Would that be a crime?

Good idea. Bad execution.

Education is the only solution to the drug problem from the standpoint of the potential user, not enforcement. I personally found it poorly structured (back when I had it in 1989), but I don't know anything about how it may have been changed since.
