You will know him best as the author of Montaillou, which is a genuinely brilliant book and was a publishing sensation in the 1970s. He wrote quite a lot of other notable works as well, though not so much for the general reader. He was a member of the Annales School and was very much a disciple of Fernand Braudel. As a young man he was a committed Communist, but he broke with the PCF over Hungary and spent some time in the PSU, and as an old man he was a bit of a right-wing crank, though he produced his best and longest lasting work in the period between when he was a sort of jaded liberal. At the time of his death, he was ninety four.
