What if Pence actually went along with Trump's insane plan? (Which apparently he might well have done if not for the advice of Dan Quayle of all people.) To say it would be a Constitutional Crisis of the highest order would be an understatement. The MAGAts would be claiming their fake electors were legitimate, Congress would try to override Pence I assume... It could get real ugly real fast, possibly even uglier than what actually happened that day.

It's possible the House and 67 Senators vote to remove him on the spot.

Pence would be facing criminal charges today, just as Trump is

Without being a legal scholar, I would imagine the Supreme Court, even in its current composition, would have ruled that Pence doesn't have the authority to block certification and his role in the process is purely ceremonial.

What if Trump then pulled a "John Roberts has made his decision, now let him enforce it!"

I guess Pence would have followed the order then though, just as he did in real life without a court ruling as he was intelligent enough to realize he didn't have the power to overturn the election.

The Joint Chiefs made it very clear they would not join a coup. Gen Milley called every active duty general and admirial to coordinate. He called the militaries of our allies and even nations like China.

Basically, Trump had no means to actually conduct a coup. Otherwise he would have.

Yes, and if he wins the 2024 he will have the means. The institutions are fragile. We survived the first Trump term because there were still a lot of insiders who stopped him and because Trump was too much of a lazy narcissist to do much governing anyway. If he wins in 2024 he will go on a revenge crusade and the people who stopped him in the past won't be there any more. It will effectively end the United States as we know it.
