Not to derail this thread with stuff from the American news media, but Sohrab Ahmari's article decrying Javier Milei is just one of the most delicious things I've ever read.

Reason isn't that extreme. Ahmari is missing an easy lay-up; he can't even characterize Milei as an extremist properly.

Well, as I love repeating to Ferguson, 'extremism' is all about your point of view. If you are Sohrab Ahmari, then I think the management of Reason is plenty extreme.

Oy Vey.

Note: converting to most forms of Judaism (example: not Reformist) is a long process.  So he probably abandons it once Israel is out of the news. But interesting nonetheless.

Isn't he the guy from the American Conservative who calls himself a social democrat or something like this?

I think that he has been practicing/studying it for many years.

The Judaism thing was known for a while. He won't convert till he can afford to observe Sabbath.

Yeah, the statement that he's actively converting has been walked back. https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/story-on-argentina-president-elect-converting-to-judaism-walked-back/

Bolsonaro will too. Lula is snubbing it but will send the foreign relations ministers.

Orban, Zelensky, Bolsonaro and I heard rumors about Bukele and Trump too. Only the nice people :insertvomitemoji:

Best president of the Americas, Nayib Bukele, is probably not coming.

I also think Trump is not going to come. Of course all the leftist dipsh**s in Latin America (except Boric) will not come. who cares?

Reportedly there's been a split in UxP, with some of the deputies responding to the moderate interior governors splitting off to form a new bloc called "Innovación Federal" with the independent Peronist governors of Salta, Misiones, Rio Negro and Neuquén.

Idk, are they? Your obsession with me is funny. Shows you’re insecure about your positions.

I just find it odd that this guy is the first far right populist type that wants to kiss up to the US. Most of these types tend to say like US when Trump was in charge but Joaquin Phoenix here wants good relations with Biden too

Yeah, it's also kind of odd he reversed planned membership in BRICS and is pro-Ukraine.

From what I’ve gathered it seems to be a combination of having a personal hatred of Putin and he thinks that giving Ukraine aid will help the economy by ingratiating Argentina into the West and her markets/Argentina mic is state control so he has direct power to ramp up production

Why? Center-right and right politics in Latin America have always been pro-western world. Latin America has to deal with this eternal identity crisis between being part of the west or our own thing and that discussion usually correlates to the right-left axis, especially in the most "European" regions like the Southern Cone.

And I wouldn't define Milei as a populist. Not at all.

Lmaaaao at the westerners here somehow being shocked at right-wingers being inherently Pro-Western or Western simps. There’s nothing LESS odd than Milei’s position, it’s in complete line with history. The rise of Trumpist Right apparently has made Western liberals think they don’t represent whiteness, only the “Populist Right”?Huh

If you’re a white supremacist or a fascist in Latin America, you certainly won’t identify yourself mostly with “the Global South” or anything, you will try to be part of the White club which shockingly for whatever reason, Europe and US represent yeah.

This has ALWAYS been the rule. Bolsonaro was extremely aligned with Trump and had pro-US rhetoric and in theory wanted to align with Europe too but clashed with them on the same way Trump did because ~Europe is too woke and green obsessed these days~.

There’s also matter of reality confronting ideology. Bolsonaro started with very strong Anti-China rhetoric but the huge chunk of his base in congress was the AGRO base which relies a lot on Chinese trade economically. You cannot advocate for the freedom of the agro to burn down the forests if they don’t have someone to sell to, so the Agro base forced more pragmatism on Bolsonaro over the years. Trump going out also weakened him a lot, upping this pressure.

Milei presidency will mirror Bolsonaro in some levels but he seems maybe less impulsive than Bozo, time will tell. Milei already is compromising on a bunch of campaign promises even before assuming, let’s see how much reality confronts his ideas.

Argentina economic situation is way too desperate, they WILL inevitably get to hyperinflation if there isn’t a major plan to save them and no one on the outside cares about them that much to give this saving in exchange of their alignment. They know very well what’s coming and they aren’t in the position to refuse any partnership abroad for the sake of abstract ideological notions.

Why do you keep insisting on putting Russia in the “global south” when Russia thinks of itself as white and most “whites supremacist”/far right movements these days look at Putin as their patron saint?

What? There literally isn’t any mention of Russia in my post, stop being obsessed with them for a while. They really are in the bottom of the list in problems you should be concerned.

The comments you are responding to deal with his position on the war and Russia, also I always love how when you get confronted on this issue you duck it because you can’t defend it.
