(Everything equal as OTL until the 1924 DNC)

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: JULY 1, 1924

Bob won't run

After William McAdoo won the democrat nomination for president, talks of a new progressive party to run agaisnt president Coolidge broke up as the democrat progressives part of it decided to endorse McAdoo. John Hylan, the democrat VP candidate, has reformist credentials and catholic roots. This ticket polarize the upper south and the upper midwest progressives.

Robert 'Bob' LaFoyette has decided to not run. On the posibility of endorsing McAdoo, he says that he 'would accept a reunion to discuss it in exchange of concessions on some issues'. What is clear is that the democrat ticket have an special progressive appeal that will try to compete for the west and the rest of the nation agaisnt a republican goverment that's successful but too conservative for some.

The Small Parties

The Socialist Partty, the Farmer Labor Party (FLP) and the Non Partisian League (NPL) are left alone on the posibilities of third party nominations, altought the forst two already have registered to all states. The democrats won't try to reach socialist, but the posibilities of reaching the other parties seems open.

After the 1920 landslide loss, democrats could give some consesions to compete in Minnesota or North Dakota. The problem is that moderating on tariffs, denounce the white protestant supremacists or maybe supporting an Anti-Lynching Bill could the requirement of these minor parties. Democrats would need to balance their interest in those states with their interest in their southern base.

The Dark Interests

After Coolidge denuncied them, groups of white protestant supremacist seemed to get closer to McAdoo before the Democrat Convention. After that, Hylan's place on the ticket erase the posibility of their alliance with democrats.
The white protestant supremacists are a group strong in both the lower midwest and the south. Their actions there could define elections.

The posibilities of a 'white protestant supremacist' ticket hasn't been denied. Rumours say they will run a third party unless the major parties avoid alineating them more.

IT WILL CONTINUE, AT LEATS UNTIL 1928

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: JULY 9, 1924

The Democrat Strategies

Yesterday, William McAdoo started his campaing with a rally in Louisville, Kentucky. He started with an usual discourse on his economic platform. Also, he appeased fears of communist infiltration in case of alliances with small progreasive parties. Then, he declared a position of 'white unity'when asked about his stance on white protestant supremacists. Then, he critiziced republicans as 'working for white desunion'. In the context of the Inmigration Act of 1924, this comments were well recieved by the white audience  there. Later, when a journalist asked if he would denounce white protestant supremacist, McAdoo responded 'I denounce every group working agaisnt white unity.'

FLP and LaFoyette endorses
This developments had inmediate consequence. Inmediatly after hearing about it, LaFoyette anounced an 'special endorse' for McAdoo. He also mantained his support for progressive republicans in some congress races. Shipstead, a senator member of the FLP, also anounced his endorse of the democrat ticket. Most expect the party to follow him.

Both emphasised in their worries about the power of banks. In the last convention, Hylan used his speech time to support 'any potential idea on bank regulation to prevent new crisis'. The business community, which remember his 'anti big interest' rethoric, had mixed reactions on the idea. Meanwhile, reformists and progressives had supported it.

Dawes and Weimar

In some cities, the film 'Die Nibelungen: Siegfried' has becomed an unlikely hit. After the WWI, german proud has got back to german americans. The reactions by german american youngs have been mixed, but their support of the republican party is certianly edoring. To stop this developments, the republican VP candidate Charles Dawes has anounced a tour to both border states and the upper midwest.

The men responsable for the Dawes Plan will visit West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. This anouncement has been controversial, but the newspapers are ready to write the discourses of one of the biggest celebrities of the party.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: JULY 13, 1924

Debs, the lesser evil?

In New York City, Eugene Debs started a new campaing as socialist candidate for president. His rally started with the usual economic and labor platform of the party, but then he declared a denounce to both party: "These major party candidates think that we are in 1856. They play te race card, the ethnic card, the religion card, the inmigrant card. They create the strangest coalitions out of it. How about a party for all? That's our party. It's time to work for every american citizen. Don't be fooled for plain denounces or the Indian Citizenship Act. They are the old parties of always, with the corporate interests of always."

The reaction was mixed, but some hours later thousands of jewish and black youngs appeared at the NY headquarters of the party. Hundreds of italian, polish and irish american youngs also appeared. Flyers with the slogan 'NO QUOTAS, NO LYNCHING' have been reported.

The NPL stays neutral

After the FLP announced an endorse to the democrat ticket, most expected the NPL to follow. Days later, the party eladers announced that they would endorse no candidate and that they would also avoid their own presidential run. Instead, they  will focus on their congressional races in North Dakota and their expantion to South Dakota.

The NPL North Dakota senator, Lynn Frazier, critizised the FLP endorse of McAdoo. He said 'They think that we need to fight these nordicist weird ideas before working for black rights, or atleast that is what they want us to think. That idea may be true, but I prefer a better candidate to a lesser evil. On the republicans, I respect the president, but I would prefer some consistency on the policies of the party, instead of trying to create weird coalitions.'

Less evil, or a new dark?

As the white protestant supremacists became divided between the ones more bigotes agaisnt blacks and the ones more bigoted agaisnt catholics and jews, their organizations are breaking apart. This events have been supported by the NCAAP and the ADL. The NCAAP chairman said 'This won't change the current situation a lot, but we can always hope for less violence'.

Meanwhile, analysts are pesimistic. They expect a temporal reduction of violence, but they expect an increase of niche violent groups by the long term. Some even expect irish vs italian american intra catholic violence as the inmigration republican policies puts their communities on different situations.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: JULY 21, 1924

Dawes goes to Indianapolis

On the capital and biggest city of Indiana, the republican VP candidate leaded a rally as planned. His discourse was focused on the current prosperity. He said ‘We need more four years of growing jobs in our factories with decent wages for us. We need to continue our tariff and avoid over-regulation’. Then, he distributed campaing buttons with the phrase ‘Coolidge: more jobs and good wages’.

As the republican rally continued, a group of demonstrators appeared. They carried a big sign saying ‘Ohio Gang to jail. No more republican corruption’. Then, Charles Dawes give a plain discourse promising ‘continued investigation’of the Ohio Gang scandals. Then, the protestors retired after distributing flyers denouncing republicans. We show what they said:

The party of Big Business works on corruption. They use middle level names to do the dirty work, putting them on big positions. This means little as the actual rulers are the big party donators. After using a irrelevant senator and his friends, they let them go to crazy aventures until they leave, so their ‘big names’ can take the stage. A Mellon and the ‘humanitarian celebrity’ Hoover becoming the supposed good members of a cabinet. Then, the supposedly moderate but ‘small goverment’ VP Coolidge taking the presidential spot. They want us to suppose them to not being part of the corruption.
Now, they give us not Wood nor Johnson, not even Lowden, but a ‘diplomatic celebrity’ as the new VP candidate. How surprising, he was also part of the Harding presidency. It’s time to open our eyes and avoid more years of plutocracy and scandals.

McAdoo on Kansas City

The democrat campaing comitee was unsure between campaining or not in Kansas. They decided to do a rally on the Kansas side of Kansas City. Yesterday, William McAdoo leaded this long waited rally. He started talking about his farm and labor proposals. He decided to criticize the Secretary of Labor James Davis as ‘the leader of a fraternal organization which Harding was also part who thinks alll day on strange ideas which divide the white race in pretext of protecting american workers, as if the sons of polish or italian inmigrants weren’t americans’.

Later, he denounced Davis as being on the side of big bussiness, promising to put a ‘proper friend of the worker like William Wilson’ on his place. He also remembered his time as Secretary of the Treasure, when he ‘worked over the short term interests of banks to save our economy to a major crisis in 1914’. Later, he said that Mellon wouldn’t do the same, as ‘he works for big banks and his family’.

Some think that this episodes of sentational criticism of the republican goverment are coordinated democrat-led actions. The old attacks on ‘republican big business friendly cabinet’ would normally fall flat, but after the Ohio Gang scandals they can now help democrats increase their appeal.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: JULY 29, 1924

Democrats going to the extreme

The democrat party tries to do whatever it takes to make the election competitive. On a surprising move, they invited the swedish economist Heckscher to talk about trade and the brittish economist Edgeworth to talk about 'oligopolies'. They plan to tour major american cities. The idea of 'oligopolies' has been explained by Hylan in a recent rally with a strong populist tone.

Fundraising events for 'the creation of an orgatization that will investigate oligopolies and push for anti-oligopolic laws'. Events anounced in Bismark, Minneapolis and Milwaukee show a new unity of the progressive movements. On more traditional competitive states, events in Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Salk Lake City and Denver have been organized.

The republican response

The republican Secretary of Commerce, Herbert Hoover, commented on the events in a public interview session. He showed his support of the current work of the FTC on monopolies. Then, he critizised the idea of 'oligopolic regulation' as both 'goverment overreach' and 'class polarization'. He also critizised the current economic theory on oligopolies as 'fringe economics'.

Then, a journalist asked him about the 'lack of persecución based on the investigations of the FTC', Hoover defectos on the issue. Then, another journalist asked him 'How fringe are Ricardo's ideas on trade for you?', to which he responded 'I defend the practical and tested American System ideas'. Maybe a chauvinismo response saved Herbert today, but alineating the working class and the college educated at the same time isn't a good combination in an electoral year.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: AUGUST 4, 1924

Dawes goes to Minneapolis

Continuing his tour, the republican VP candidate visited yesterday the biggest city of Minnesota. He used his time tthere to talk about his defense of tariffs. Worries about the future outputs of Germany and Japan were combined with sentimental chauvinist tones. He critizised the democrats stance on the issue on focusing in 'cash crops' and forgetting the average small american farmer who 'deserves a better life than his latinoamerican counterparts'.

Later, he defender the republican fight for a federal Anti-Lynching Bill. He proclamed that 'if every non southern state selected only republican senator, we would have 62 senate votes for the bill'. He also defender the rpeublcian inmigration policies, saying that 'we need to give our jobs and wages to the current american citizens of every ethnicity' The audience reaction was positive, altought the topics of labor and monopolies were ignored.

Debs on Chicago

In the biggest city of Illinois and the Midwest, the socialist presidential candidate leaded a rally on the burgeoning black areas of the 'South Side'. There, he critizised both parties and defending his economic ideas. He proclamed his support of laws for job security regulation at meatpacking houses and mines. He also called for an unemployment goverment assurance.

Later, the socialist candidate for the US House seat there (a black man) appeared. He proclamed the Socialist Party's support of ending the senate filibuster and supporting a simple majority senate vote law. After most of the audience applauded the proposals, a member of the audience screamed 'When will your party denounce Stalin?'. Debs deflected on the question, focusing on an 'anti-interventionist' doctrine.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: AUGUST 18, 1924

Polls

After the scandals of the Harding cabinet, the republican slow persecución of the Ohio Gang and the new rumours over Mellon and other republicans have destroyed further the inage of the GOP. McAdoo's rethoric on the issue has make the election surprisingly competitive. Some NLP leaders have endorse the democrat ticket.

Coolidge Cool Porch

Altrought moat expected the president to avoid campainig himselft at all, he has anounced his plans to do a 'Cool Porch' strategy in his house in Massachusetts. Some supose it as a wya to avoid northeastern deflaction to the democrats, especially as Hylan plans to tour the region.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: SEPTEMBER 1, 1924

Mellon's invitation

After weeks of rumous, the 'Mellon Letters' seem to confirm a shady correlation between the 'Mellon tariffs' and manufacturing business related to Mellon National Bank. The implication of U.S. Steel on these letters has been used by democrat propaganda. Even if some think those letters were forget, the Secretary of the Treasure recieved yesterday an invitation from Congress. It won't be a party for him: he has been called to a hearing.

Even if Mellon renounces, this will hurt republicans. As Heckscher tours major cities, the campaing agaisnt the 'Mellon Tariffs' tries to cover all posible audiences. Fraiser and Shipstead have also denounced the events. In New York, a 'New Cabinet Now' organization has appeared. Even if they pamphlets seem too sensationalist, their readers now expect to find later some of their claims to be true.

Illinois Plays

Even if the campaing in this state by both major parties focus on Chicago and Metro East, Peoria is also in play. As polling business have state and regional offices in this small city, democrats try to catch better polling by campaining there. As republican poll numbers continue falling, they try to get back some votes with cartoons. Yesterday, 4 republican newspapers published cartoons on the 'Peoria democrat play'  events. On a more neutral tone, we have united to these efforts is the page which number you already knows.

On Jazz

The trendy music style of New Orleans, popular both in the South and the North, has not avoided controversies. Its black roots has got it critics, even if every day more white bands play it. Meanwhile, parents think this music style promotes a singular lifestyle. Some hard line prohibitionists relate it to places where illegal liquor is sold.

In New York State, republicans try to campaing on these worried, relating Hylan to jazz, liquor and Harlem. Even if the New York major has renounced to this claims, the attacks persist. Despite this, the democrat VP candidate continues his plans to campaing in our Northeastern region. From Trenton to Manchester, our readers wait for him.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: SEPTEMBER 15, 1924

The Socialist grow

As Coolidge numbers fall as the scandals of the Harding/Coolidge cabinet continues, accusations by republicans to McAdoo try to change the trends. They want alineated progressive independients and republicans to vote for whoever over supporting McAdoo. We show you one of those pamphlets:

'Willy plays an unfair game. He tries to make people on Montana, Wisconsin, New York and other states that he runs only for economic reform. That's false. He isn't a new name, he is another member of the Wilson cabinet. In secret, he supports the pro-brittish internationalism of Wilson. His love of free trade means in practice support of brittish merchants.
Make no mistake, he only supports the interests of his old bank, merchant and southern farmer backers as usual. As always, a democrat victory means southern domination on the cabinet, lead by this man from Georgia.'

Polls

As said before, the increased support of the Socialist Party cuts democrat dains in the Midwest and the Northeast, by now.

Fayfield: the placeholder

The senator from Texas, accepted the nomination by the 'American Party' ticked. This small party was founded as an alliance of white protestant supremacist groups and southern isolationsists. Despite that, he hasn't campaigned for that ticket.

Instead, he has recently visited Cincinnati in Ohio, one of the non southern states where his ticket has some support. There, he has pledged his 'conditional' support of McAdoo. He will continue touring the lower midwest, reaching his expected audience. Even if democrats try to say otherwise, those type of voters may define the election.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: SEPTEMBER 29, 1924

Boston, Hylan and a college student

The democrat VP candidate ended his northeastern tour on Boston the last sunday (yesterday). I  the morning, he was part of a great parade from Cambridge to South Boston. Harvard students followed the iriah and italian working class supporters of the dem parade.

On the afternoon, thousands of locals reunited on Fenway Park, where Hylan along with prominent democrats of the state. There, he proclamed 'A new future for our cities for all. This is the party for the American Dream.' After proclaiming the expected labor, economic and inmigration stances, John Hylan noticed a group of Harvard students taking photos of the rally at a corner.

Then, Hyaln invited one of them to the stand. He asked him about the party that his family voted (he said 'Republican'). Then, he asked him 'Will you follow your family, or take a stance yourseft?'. The Harvard student answered 'The vote is secret, but it will depend of myself'. Then, the democrat VP candidate said ti all the audience 'Let's forget about the old lines amd the fear campaing. It's time to vote for the issues and for the ticket that will work more for you.'

The rebel conservatives

Edward Jackson, an Indiana state cabinet member, is the vicepresidential candidate of the American Party. After Mayfield decided that 'McAdoo and Hylan don't deserve pur support'. As southerns prefer McAdoo that 'corrupt yankee' Coolidge, the American Party now focuses on the Midwest. Between Ohio and Indiana, the party tries to win alineated conservatives.

Jackson's controversial statements have been avoided to be published by a number of newspapers. This newspaper, trying to be neutral, will publish an special edition with them the next wednesday. Only voting age citizens will have access to it.

Have they recruited any pastors who've been willing to describe the Democrats as the party whose antecedents have been rum, rhythm and rebellion?

Speaking of bad campaigning, the Republican Party is going to lose this election. Rev. Burchard can give himself a pat on the back for being an effective Republican operator in comparison: he only smeared. This pamphlet is premised in its entirety on lies, misconceptions and omissions of fundamental party policy.

Firstly, they're trying to appeal to voters in three different states with no obvious connection between them. Even in modern day politics, you just don't try and identify issues of simultaneous concern only to "people on Montana, Wisconsin, New York and other states" - you campaign on a state-by-state basis or issue a generic national advert.

Secondly, they have no idea where they're going with this attack on free trade. The main concern wasn't that McAdoo was too friendly to the British - that attack line had been out of fashion for a good couple of decades. It was that tariff reductions paved the way for an income tax (and, I'd assume, would have supposedly harmed American industry as well).

Thirdly, they're going completely the wrong way with the attack on McAdoo himself. He was from California, not Georgia. Nobody was denying "He isn't a new name," either - he was a close relative of President Wilson, his involvement in the Wilson Cabinet and surely the Teapot Dome scandal would have been well-known to voters. And if I was attacking him, I would certainly not give him the cutesy epithet of "Willy."

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: OCTOBER 15, 1924

Mayfield survives but goes to bed

Mayfield's campaing trail on the upper south and the rest of the country has officialy ended. After being shot in Charlotte, he has been confined to bed for the next weeks. Even if the event won't hurt his long term health as some feared, this will still hurt his campaing. His most faithful followers will continue reading his letters to various newspapers and trying to campaing with his name.

Meanwhile, McAdoo's allied congress candidates in the area have been campaining strong in the area. The mysterious Kentucky boy continue his deeds for the party. Accoding to some locql newspapers, he has now moved to Tennessee, trying to persuade Nashville to carry his donkey pins. Some say its a campaing trick by democrats, but it may help to make Tennessee a dem state again.

The Socialists goes down to zero

As the republican scandals and rumours are now hurting even the secretary of commerce Hoover and the republican campaing machinations have failed, their poll numebrs have decreased on all front. Even his Milwaukee stronghold seems trending democrat. Accoding to recent polls, Berger is polling too close to the democrat candidate and this will continue.

Meanwhile, the new 'Rum and romanism' republican campaing on the northeast has failed as it did in 1884. The wet, catholic and anti-crime vote has leaved for all the socialist party in the region, leaving them only with part of their old jewish base and some of their new black supporters.    Debs continue campaining in the city, but most expect London to not get back his old seat.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: OCTOBER 27, 1924

Rumours for Secretary positions

A popular rumour in the last weeks was the idea of a Farmer-Labor party member becoming Secretary of Agriculture if McAsoo wins the state as thanks for his alliance with that minor party agaisnt republicans. This has been recently confirmed by him, altrought he said that he will push for 'a geographic balance in the department'.

This news comes as the nation mourns the death of Henry Wallace, one of the few Coolidge cabinet members that haven't been attacked by McAddo in his campaing. Instead, he was open to keep him, making voters remember Wallace's defense of the McNary–Haugen Act and Hoover's oposition to it. As McAdoo's propaganda machine now blames Hoover of causing indirectly Wallace's death, we can only expect it to try to make putting a FLP member as Wallace's sucesor be seen as a sensible idea to the maases.

From Sweden to the Federal Cabinet

Some of the names rumoured to the position is senator
Magnus Johnson. Even if the idea may seem sensible due to both his experience in the sector and state level politics, its stil controversial. Some critisize the ideological and policy implications of his party membership, while others critisize him on the fact that he was born in Sweden.

The Factory side of the Issue

As the American Party surge in the midwest have decreased, Ohio and Illinois republicans are spending all of the money they can to keep those state on their side. As one could expect, they focus on both their conservative base and factory workers. Coolidge has campained on Illinois, and party surrogates continue campaining for him there.

Meanwhile, the campaing in Ohio is leaded by members of the party from the state. Unsurprisingly, their campaing has focused on Northeastern Ohio, where their discourse combines traditional pro manufacturing stances and attacks to the democrats. Will the old anti free trade stances work this time? We will know in the future.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: NOVEMBER 5, 1924

Despite some expentations, the American Party continue having strong numbers in some states. Even if most expect it to end up losing all states, the early results don't discard the contrary.

The final results:

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: NOVEMBER 9, 1924

The near future

As McAdoo's electoral victory was confirmed, the near future welcomes new questions. After years of republican scandals, all the eyes will be in the next cabinet. All the regions and parts of the McAdoo coalition expect to the represented there. As always, this includes southern interests.
Progressivism have won in what some supposed to be a conservative decade. Even if democrats may only get a majority at the House and Senate if including their new allies (NPL and FLP), we can expect McAdoo to pass most of his legislation, as the progressive republicans left will continue having a say there.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: NOVEMBER 25, 1924

Early Cabinet announcements

Robert Lansing, the former Secretary of State, was announced to take back his position the enxt year by the elected president McAdoo. This selection has meant for some analysts as an stop to the fears of McAdoo taking back the League of Nations unpopular cause.

Also, he has announced John Davis for the position of Attorney General. This concesion to the conservative wing of the party may be the last on the cabinet. Most expect the elected president to full the rest of cabinet position with progressives. This would include a progressive republican, some say. Only the future will tell.

Hoover: No more politics

The questioned Secretary of Commerce may have avoided an impeachment, but his popularity has decreased even in his party. After years of a now questioned success in appointed offices, his dreams to maybe become president in the future have become null. Meanwhile, Kansas party leaders try to distant themselves of him, as even Curtis is now more popular than Hoover.

Herbert Hoover, the former hope of republicanism for the 1928 elections, has now announced his retirement. He says that he is 'tired of the fake accusations by yellow journalists'. It's true that some of those accusations are fake nonsense, but most expect the next congress to continue the investigations.

NORTHERN AND EASTERN TIMES: DECEMBER 19, 1924

The Secretary of Labor question

Recent remours of the posibilities of the AFL leader and former state senator (with the democratic party), William Green, have not being denied by McAdoo nor by Hylan. As expected, union workers and progressive activists have been suporting of this posibilityn Meanwhile, conservative newspaper continue critizising the idea. In any case, most expect McAdoo to end up choosing a more moderate name for the position.

Meanwhile, some pamphlets have appeared proclaming 'McAdoo's secret socialist plans'. Accoding to this texts, McAdoo would put Eugene Debs as Secretary of Labor and later, he would replace his more moderate and conservative cabinet picks with other socialists. Accoding to these pamphlet, Daniel Hoan would be the secretary of Commerce by 1926. Also, London would become Attorney General accoding to that paper. The pamphlet ends saying that Upton Sinclair, the famous socialist writer, would end up becoming secretary of state. The great majority don't believe this ideas, but there is alway room for imagination and yellow propaganda in this country.

Glass to the future

As most expected, Virginia senator Carter Glass was confirmed by Hylan to become the next Secretary of the Treasure. After Mellon renounced, the temporal Winston department administration has avoided much action. Most expect the next congress to approve the traditional democrat plans to lower tariff rates. Also, most expect the future tax policy to become more progressive, altrough mantaining low tax rates for the middle and lower class.

Meamwhile, the (favorable) response of Glass to the news has been not short of controversy: 'The days of old nonsense are over. Light has come over dark. Progress and reason overcome pseudo-science. It's not time to look at the past, not even the close past of Wilson or Roosevelt. It's tiempo for the future of McAdoo and democracy. As always, we have to overcome. We need to leave the jungle and the praire and search for progress and civilization. It's time to work for both the farm and the city. I will make my part for the new adminsitration, and I expect our fellow citizens to do theirs'. What hidden meanings does this speech have? Analyse it yourself.

The Harlem Sound

LaGuardia, a progressive republican and US House member, broke his party afiliation to run as a independent for reelection as the republican scandals hurt the party reputation in New York City. As most expected, he won another term on his district based on East Harlem. After the election, the question is on his future. Some expect him to come back to the republican party as the Harding and Coolidge gang leave politics. The rest expect him to unite to the socialist party or the Farmer Labor Party.

There should only be 96 Senators, not 100, for both the pre- and post-election results; Alaska and Hawaii aren't states yet.
