Santos originally ran before withdrawing following a troublesome report from the House Ethics Committee. Had he never withdrawn, how well do you think he would've done?

Very poorly. I think Santos' ceiling probably would be around 2%.

Also, with much of the GOP base consisting of evangelical Christians I can't see many of them "holding their nose" for an openly gay Republican unless the Democratic opponent is particularly repugnant to that wing of the party (depending on the organization, some probably would consider a third-party candidate).
