I was just going over some New Jersey election results and stumbled across the bio of Samuel D Thompson. He's an 88 year old New Jersey state senator (though is leaving office when his current term ends) and a lifelong Republican who became a Democrat in February before deciding not to run for re-election. What I found most interesting was his political bio given that he's a octogenarian Alabama native who started out as a Republican before becoming a Democrat in his old age.

Only reason I thought this was relevant to put here was because we spend a lot of time discussing demographic outliers and counter-cyclical voters and he seems to be a prime example of the former. I could theoretically see a white southerner of that generation that was liberal on civil rights and an ancestral unionist switching parties (though they probably would have ages ago) but Thompson isn't that even. He voted for Trump twice and seems to have only switched because of internal state party conflicts.
