Woops I misread the poll.
It should say 40% of Democrats who are atheists are 18-29.

I thought that what I stated in the title was a little high.

I am going to change the title from "40% of Democrats 18-29 are atheists" to "What percentage of Democrats are atheists?"

I don't know the answer to the latter question so I am wondering if anyone here does.

Maybe a better question would be what percentage of Democrats identity as Christians.

As of the Pew Religious Landscape Study, 63% of Democrats were Christian, and 5% were atheists.  I’m sure both have shifted since then, but likely not exponentially.

Even then, a very small minority of White Democrats are atheists.

It's easy to work out from exit poll cross tabs.

Voters/Biden Voters (Fox)

Protestant 26/19
Catholic 22/21
Mormon 1/0
Other Christian 18/14
Jewish 3/4
Muslim 1/1
Other 8/10
None 21/31

White Protestant/Other Christian 33/19
White Catholic 16/13
White Other 9/9
White None 16/22
Non White 26/37

So nearly a third of Bidens base were 'Nones'. It's also his biggest base with White voters. Neatly a quarter of non white Bidden voters were also 'Nones'

And worth noting;

To borrow a phrase, American 'nones' aren't 'temporarily embarrassed Christians'; the fact so few identify as Atheist despite Gallup recently identifying only 64% to 81% believing in God depending on how the question is asked is a reflection of US discourse.

None is None. It's not a holding pen.

I find it highly suspect to count such a diverse group as some unified group.  An atheist is making a definitive claim about his belief in God that a majority of Nones just simply are not.

It's not good conceptually but it's hard to think of a better alternative.

I'm not saying 'None' equals strictly atheistic, even allowing for the distinctly American baggage that comes with that term that as I've outlined before, isn't really that loaded elsewhere. But they aren't religious. The 'holding pen' analogy I think is fair because so much analysis in the 2010's was based on where these people were coming from (usually Christianity) and assuming it was some blip.

They aren't 'going back', even when settling down. It's a similar trajectory to what the UK has seen for decades; it's just slightly delayed. Research shows they tend to hold broadly similar political and cultural positions, so they are effectively a growing electoral 'bloc'.

not very many people who are not religious identify as atheist, more would say agnostic or just “none” or even Christian if they’re of the lapsed variety

True, the only possible options here are to be a Mormon or militant atheist who worships cats.

Did anybody else notice that these numbers are from 2014 and thus almost a decade old? Not trying to start an argument, just realized that no one else seems to have mentioned this and I feel like these statistics will have changed significantly in the past nine years.

The General Social Survey has been ongoing for 50 years.

It currently shows that 35% of Democrats are 'Nones' compared to 14% of Republicans and 33% of independents. The figures are broadly the same for the response; 'Not religious'

I believe I was the first poster to mention Pew, and I indeed said these have likely shifted since then but not exponentially.

I was agnostic until my mom died and I said wait GOD is judgement and we all gonna be judge but there are different characteristics of GOD our Father that humans placed on him, a genie; consequently, some people have moved to say they don't believe in GOD. But, GOD isn't a genie, he is Christ a Deity that we assign to worship him, that provides our needs, and to be a millionaire is something else entirely.

Let's be honest. A lot of people who say they're agnostic are just too scared to admit they're atheists

well it's more like they just don't care, they don't think about religion in their daily lives too much and it doesn't affect them.

They could be agnostic atheists who don't feel 100% confident in saying a deity does not exist. Agnostics are wide in their range of careless about  the existence of God. In 2023 most such people would say they're outright atheists.

To the extent this is true, this is a good thing. There absolutely should be some level of social taboo against open atheism. It's deeply corrosive.
