A sandwich needs a floor and a ceiling. A bread cocoon is not a sandwich.

Yes.

A grinder is a sandwich too.

I had a friend working in an abattoir, and he said that they don't waste any part of the animal. Hence sausages and hot dogs.

But why do they taste so good?

It's because they are made up of all of the other parts of the animal that don't make the grade for steaks, pork chops and chicken breast and wings.

When we were cavemen, we would have eaten the whole animal apart from the bones and the guts. And those parts can still be tasty.

How are they made?

According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council the hot dog is not a sandwich and I abide by the council's decision.

I am a sandwich radical. If a hoagie is a sandwich, so is a hot dog. I would even be willing to go a step further and say a taco is a sandwich as well.

How is it not? A banh mi of course is a sandwich but doesn't have 2 distinct pieces of bread, instead using the "cocoon" construction method, much as a bunned hot dog does.

Do a test, next time when someone asks you to make them a sandwich make them a hot dog and see what the reaction is. You’ll find out it’s not a sandwich then.

It’s the same as a taco or a (flatbread style) gyro.

With a bun, I would say yes. If a sub is a sandwich, so is a hotdog with a bun. The bread does not have to be cut all the way through to become a sandwich.

Do a test, next time when someone asks you to make them a sandwich make them a hot dog and see what the reaction is. You’ll find out it’s not a sandwich then.

I would never automatically accept a sandwich where I didn't know the contents (particularly the meat and cheese). I'd also say that by your logic, I should be surprised if I got a sub.
