Shared by Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan
Unironically this. The saviors of cinema?
Spiderman No Way Home made more money than either film back in 2021. It made 1.9 billion and both films combined made 2.3 billion. And Spiderman was never released in China, it easily would have made the additional 400 million
More Spider-Mans and Whatever-Mans are not what I'm talking about.

Nolan is only famous because of Batman. A huge portion of the people who saw Oppenheimer was because of that.

Barbie is based on a literal toy. Its just as commercialized as Spider-Man

The idea that people saw these films because they expected an artsy masterpiece is just silly. They had big names starring, big name directors and reconizible properties behind them

1.) Nolan was popular before Batman
2.) For the first time in a decade, the biggest event in movies didn't involve a man in a cape. That's a good thing.
3.) The reason why the Barbie movie is so beloved is because of Greta Gerwig and her writing/directing. If they had made IP slop like they do with a lot of movies nowadays, it would just be another generic IP movie. Nothing special.
4.) No one was watching Oppenheimer because of Batman. They went to see it because of Nolan. Can't say the same for the people who direct Marvel films.

Nolan is at least as famous for Interstellar and Inception as he is for those Batman movies.

1. Most people never heard of him before Batman
2. Barbie and Oppenheimer were basically marketed as superhero movies
3. Ok, most people saw it opening weekend before Gerwig’s writing was recognized. Most people saw it because they wanted pinked theme instagram photos
4. Lol, unless you are a history nerd (like me) the only reason people saw Oppenheimer is
A. Atomic bomb go boom
B. The guy who directed Batman made it

People saw Oppenheimer because it was a Nolan movie. No matter what movie he makes on any topic it's going to take in a lot of money. That it was getting Oscar buzz for the acting only enhanced this.

Why Nolan now? Nolan didn't get it for Dunkirk.

Netanyahu or Hamas deserve it for taking the spotlight away from Ukraine and bringing the Israel/Palestine divide back to the forefront.

Xi Jinping.

He's been the biggest newsmaker, even if it's in a negative way.

I actually think Time is very likely to do something stupid and make ChatGPT person of the year.

In terms of actual humans who might get it I'd say maybe Netanyahu or Taylor Swift.

Why is Taylor Swift so special all of a sudden? Does any musician who has a successful marketing blitz deserve person of the year? Still, she's a more respectable choice then some tech bro ChatGPT crap. Would not shock me at all if they went that direction.

Although, now that I think of it, ChatGPT is at least more relevant to human society and culture. Sure, it's making it all worse, but as others have said villains get Person of the Year too. But at least Taylor Swift, as overstated as her popularity is, is a real person lmao.

Narenda Modi

He exemplifies the messiness of modern world politics.

He is immensely popular. More people may support him than any other elected official ever.

With Taylor Swift, I don't think culture has the effect of new technology or the major world leaders.

It wouldn't be a bad choice.

This is a game-changer in many different fields.

Though the impact may not be fully realized at this point.

Sadly, this is not a criteria to become POTY. Neither is popularity.

This is what they'll actually do.

It should be Altman, or maybe even Sutskever.

I have a feeling that whoever (or whatever) they pick it will demonstrate how grotesquely out of touch these people are.

As a matter of 'Person of the Year' being someone who's actually changed the world rather than someone I personally like, I can agree with this, especially Altman.

Generative AI is the nail in the coffin as far as the free exchange of information goes. Within a year or two it will be downright impossible to find anything of value on Google, worse than it already is. Information produced by real people will have to be heavily curated and moderated as a result. These AI people are among the most catastrophic non-politicians in America at the moment.
