Bush beat Dukakis by more than 3 points in Vermont while Bernie only lost the House race by 4 points to the Republican because of a strong Democratic candidate. So there must have been a handful of these voters at least.

There was more ticket splitting in 2000 and 2004.

There really weren't many. Looking at the results by county on ourcampaigns.com, the 1988 Sanders vote was heavily correlated with Dukakis vote. Any who existed were probably upset with both crime and the economic system.

1 The Cold War was still a thing by 1988. A winning point for Bush Sr agaisnt the "tank rider".
2 It was the last hurrah of moderate republicans. The last time Connecticut voted republican.
