The media is obsessed with Biden's supposed cognitive decline but if you've had the displeasure of watching Trump speak as of late he's a complete mess. He stumbles over prompter scripts, is slurring words left and right, going on weird and unhinged tangents, and looks incredibly low energy.

He couldn't walk down a ramp while Biden was shown riding his bike multiple times. Just sayin'.

Hopefully the courts see it that way too and realize you can't convict a man with limited mental cognition for masterminding schemes, concealing information, or speaking falsehoods when he has a limited grasp on what's going on around him since his battle with COVID-19, a known cause of brain fog with long-term effects in the elderly.

What is worse is that the crowds applaud when he says things that make no sense. He falling apart and being cheered on which goes to show the state that Republicans are in. His mental state is why he refused to participate in any debates. He just doesn't have the capacity for it.

Just because he dyes his hair and tans his skin, it doesn't make him more mentally astute.

It’s fun to watch people try to ape the criticisms of Biden by pointing out Trump is as aimless and unscripted as he’s always been.

The last one of these isn’t even a gaffe, just a propaganda account pretending their limited vocabulary means an idiom doesn’t exist.

He's far more incoherent than he was before and anyone who doesn't admit that just doesn't want to admit the truth. And look at his truth social, those posts are far more unhinged than anything he wrote in his Twitter era (hard to imagine). You all say Biden is completely out of his mind without evidence and that Obama is running the country, yet you lose your mind if someone shows video evidence of Trump in true mental decline. Make that make sense.

It's this. Exactly this. For whatever reason, it's already baked into Trump. His whole "says crazy things!!" is seen as just a point of his personality, so that when he continues to do things like this, it's not "he's clearly in mental decline", it's just seen as "oh just trump being trump!!" which just proves that he's held to an incredibly smaller bar than Biden, and pretty much everyone else.

The press isn't even trying to cover these two things evenly. We've had how many clips now of Trump sounding deranged and in serious cognitive decline, and there's been no talk of "he's too old" like there is with Biden.

I've had a number of posts deleted for "excessive hyperbole" for suggesting that Biden is senile.  In light of that, merely allowing this thread to stand is a gross double standard.

This could be both-sides'd to some extent [favoring Biden by a country mile, but still], but that there aren't many viable young candidates that are clearly sharper trying is rather bizarre to say the least.

I hope with 2028, there aren't any candidates where this is a plausible point of contention.

It doesn't matter in terms of 2024 results because the reason why Biden is unpopular is because of his poor results (ie economy on the brink of a recession given the yield curve is uninverting, corporate defaults on an all time high, real wage growth negative, deficits at 2 trillion even before the recession started; as well as high profile wars starting all over the world), not his age.

Since the topic is "decline," yes, they're obviously held to varying standards.

     y = mx + b

If you want to make a separate post about how Trump is not a very sharp speaker, no one is going to be interested.

Are we seriously going to act like media has ever treated Trump like a "normal" politician? Like, yes obviously he's held to a lower standard than Joe Biden. That's because so much of the coverage of Trump rallies and speeches are along the lines of "can you believe what this crazy mofo said today?"

Trump isn't in cognitive decline or senile, he's just an idiot who has always been an idiot.

Watch a recent rally of his and one from the 2020 campaign. He’s not the same as he used to be. Whether it’s mental, physical or both, the man has clearly declined when you compare before and after.

Context matters. I call this the "OSR / Republican post-modernist vacuum fallacy". We dont live in a post-modernist vacuum where everything is analyzed in exactly the same way and treated the exact same way. We don't treat statements from Michael Jackson regarding young children in the exact same way that we treat statements from Mr. Rogers regarding young children. We don't treat statements from Ted Kaczynski regarding terrorism in the same way that we treat statements from Amy Klobuchar regarding terrorism. Context matters.

If Trump has supplied ample very clear and unequivocal evidence for cognitive decline, and the evidence for Biden's cognitive decline is less definitive, then it is only logical that the definition of "excessive hyperbole" may be slightly different for those two people.
