There were five of them near the border with SC, and some were strong for Eugene Talmadge in 1946.

My guess is that the poor whites there were Tillman-esque white supremacists whom also fell for the favorite son effect of Thurmond coming from the other border.

I cannot name and locate any US county by heart other than major cities or those with remarkable voting histories (Elliott County, KY and Hooker County, NE being examples).
I will figure it out when I come back home.
