Bibi, Smotrich, and Ben Gvir for all the hostages is a good trade.

Some very interesting discussion on Gaza on Channel 4.

Channel 4 Update

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWRE3x6pjqA

The situation surrounding two young Israeli female hostages was resolved today.

One alive and rescued. One dead.

An interesting discussion about Gaza from former Palestinian representatives talking about Gaza elections.

PBS News Hour

https://youtu.be/ITHpFbpt5GQ?t=1499

PBS News Hour had a section on the issue of rising antisemitism in the USA.

US media coverage is so biased towards Israel. That's not news, but it's pretty cringe at moments. Watched Dana Bash "interview" with some IDF spokesperson, the lengths she went to basically apologize to a guy for some softball questions is amazing. Should be put in some journalistic hall of shame

Also, no sign of Israel invasion of Gaza. It's an expanded ground operation, almost like Special Military Operation.

Conflict set to escalate further where the USA may be drawn into this War.

Former United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, Mick Mulroy, talks about Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthi Rebels in Yemen and Syrian groups and the distinct possibility of those actors turning this conflict into a 4-way front attack on the IDF.

"There is a substantial likelihood, this could expand".

Russia started with a big invasion, so the description there was a fig leaf. Remember - Biden tried to give them room to do what the IDF are doing now by saying an invasion of the Donbas might just be a "minor incursion," but they went for Kyiv anyway.

The IDF wants to avoid even the perception of a big invasion, but the problem with staggering a campaign like this is that it goes against the principle of using mass in manoeuvre warfare, which (if done properly) has been pretty important since time began. The slow march makes it easier for Iran and co. to back down, but it probably makes the invasion more costly/challenging for both the IDF and the people of Gaza.

In some actual news it sounds like the IDF has begun their assault into the outskirts of Gaza City.

You're not going to get anywhere arguing something as clearly wrong as that. If that chart is correct it doesn't support "unrestrained strategic bombing with an explicit strategy of maximising damage." Gaza City is extremely dense with over 15000 people per square mile. If that was really their objective, over 6000 Israeli strikes would have much much higher death numbers.

There is plenty of room to argue that Israel's bombing campaign isn't sufficiently concerned with civilian causalities or that some other strategy to deal with Hamas is appropriate, but people advocating the obviously false position that Israel is right now intentionally trying to maximise damage does nothing but taint the (already horrible) discourse and make any sort of consensus (let me dream) impossible.

In the case of a nuclear power like Israel, one cannot say it's "maximising damage" right now, in spite of the ongoing massacre. Israel's army has the power to completely devastate the Gaza Strip and the neighbouring countries.  Rather, Israel’s army is bombing civilians indiscriminately and without restraint or any humanitarian consideration.  Certainly the Hamas raid on October 7 was atrocious, but so far Israel's response has murdered about 5 or 6 civilians for each casualty caused by the militia based in Gaza.  These figures speak volumes about the unwillingness to minimise damage and are consistent with the narrative of a political regime presided by a man (Herzog) who denies the existence of civilians in Gaza. The message is plain and simple: all the population is terrorist and deserves collective punishment. Both Israel and Hamas supporters invoke a delusuonal right to self-defense that involves crimes of war and ultimately genocide. If we were under a rules based order, the rest of the world would be pushing to stop it

I dispute this comment because it makes an assumption about Bilaps that I think is a bit off.

I remain convinced that Hamas must be ousted militarily, but the longer this goes on the more convinced I become that Israel is either unable or unwilling to conduct this war in a manner that is either ethical or lawful. Unfortunately I don't really know what can be done.

So this is 100% a war crime under any sane definition.

My worst fears about how Netanyahu would carry out this war are being confirmed.

Israel has huge stockpiles plus a substantial domestic arms industry, so I doubt it.

No? It doesn't even seem like sources within the Gaza Strip are disputing that the area was used to store munitions and therefore a legitimate military target.

If the war’s end means Netanyahu’s (and I’m not sure it does - his original coalition partners probably want to remain in charge), then he will try to maintain (at least) an impression of a long war.

I don't understand why the Israeli people aren't demanding elections now. He got over 1,000 of them killed by pampering the settlers and ignoring everything else. Why do they trust him to lead this invasion?

People are ignoring totally the fact that this all happened on his watch. Trump even noted that.
